Acceptability of cardiac donation after circulatory determination of death: a survey of the Canadian public

ConclusionThe results of this national survey of public attitudes towards cardiac DCDD will inform the implementation of cardiac DCDD programs in a manner that is consistent with public values.

Authors: Hankinson SJ, Williams CH, Ton VK, Gottlieb SS, Hong CC Abstract INTRODUCTION: Heart failure is associated with increased neurohormonal activation that results in changes in body composition including volume overload and the loss of skeletal muscle, body fat, and bone density. Bioelectrical impedance measures body composition based on the conduction of electrical current through body fluids. AREAS COVERED: The PubMed and Scopus databases were reviewed up to the third week of June 2020. Cross-sectional studies, retrospective observational studies, prospective observational studies, and randomized contro...

Conclusion: Currently, available evidence indicates that SMI, as an adjuvant for basic Western medicine treatment, can improve the cardiac function of patients with CHF with good safety outcomes. Because of the high risk of bias among the included RCTs and the large heterogeneity of partial outcomes, the findings of this study must be verified by high-quality studies with large sample sizes. In spite of this, the mechanisms by which phthalate exposures cause adverse cardiac health outcomes are unclear. In particular, whether phthalate exposures during pregnancy interfere with normal developmental pro...

CONCLUSIONS: Volumetric SE is highly feasible with all stresses, and more frequently impaired in presence of ischemic RWMA, absence of viability and reduced coronary flow velocity reserve. It identifies an altered stroke volume response due to reduced preload and/or contractile reserve. PMID: 32657562 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Perrone MA, Macrini M, Maregnani A, Ammirabile M, Clerico A, Bernardini S, Romeo F Abstract BACKGROUND: High sensitivity cardiac troponins I (hs-cTnI) and T (hs-cTnT) and natriuretic peptides (BNP and NTproBNP) are universally recognized as cardiac reference biomarkers in patients with acute coronary syndromes and heart failure respectively. However, while on one hand the high sensitivity methods of cardiac biomarkers have provided answers to fundamental pathophysiological and clinical questions in patients with heart disease, less information is available on their assessment in paraphysiological condition...

Authors: Matta M, Devecchi C, De Vecchi F, Barbonaglia L, Gravellone M, Occhetta E, Rametta F Abstract BACKGROUND: Cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) is a treatment option for patients suffering symptomatic chronic heart failure (CHF) with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) who are not eligible for cardiac resynchronization. Data on mid-term follow-up are limited to small observational studies. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of CCM on quality of life, symptoms, exercise tolerance and left ventricular function in patients with CHF and moderate-to- severe left ventricular systolic dy...

AbstractThe impact of elevated total bilirubin (Tbil) levels on adverse clinical outcomes in patients with acute heart failure (HF) has not been fully established, although liver damage is common among these patients. We therefore examined the associations between Tbil levels at admission and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in patients with acute HF in an emergency setting and to evaluate clinical outcomes related to elevated Tbil, particularly in patients with SBP
