Understanding Infection Prevention Practices in Optometry Clinics

CONCLUSIONS Our data highlight several areas of concern in the practice of standard or transmission-based precautions in the sampled population. First, hand-hygiene policies are not well enforced. Second, personal protective equipment is not appropriately used while examining potentially infectious patients. Third, eye-drop vials are not consistently discarded if contaminated with eye secretions. Lastly, a large proportion of surveyed practices use inadequate disinfection techniques of tonometers.

AbstractGambling is a popular activity among older adults. Despite this increase in popularity little research has examined gambling among this group. This is especially true for minority older adults, like Francophones in Ontario. The purpose of this study was to better understand gambling in a sample of older Francophones from North-Eastern Ontario, the first study to do so. A sample of 181 older (over 55  years) Francophones from Northeastern Ontario (M age = 68.7, SD 7.6) was recruited. This sample was compared to a sample of older adults with English as their native language that had been previously...

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria measurements, for ethanol–water mixtures with 2-hydroxyethylamonium formate and 2-hydroxyethylamonium butyrate, at initial concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% mass fraction, have been carried out at 101.3...

In this study, we found that Lefty-1 alleviates EMT induction through antagonizing TGF-β/Smad pathway in vivo and in vitro. In unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model mice, administration of adenovirus-mediated overexpression of Lefty-1 (Ad-Lefty-1) significantly reduced TGF-β1/Smad expression and alleviated t he phenotypic transition of epithelial cells to mesenchymal cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation. In high glucose-induced rat renal tubular duct epithelial cell line (NRK-52E), EMT and ECM synthesis were alleviated with Lefty-1 treatment, which significantly inhibited TGF-β1/Smad pathw...
