The Evaluation of Intra-Operative Frozen Section Diagnosis Accuracy of Ovarian Tumors; Old Fashioned Not Out of Fashion.

CONCLUSION: The frozen section results yielded accurate diagnosis for rapid intraoperative evaluation of ovarian tumors. Its high accuracy allows for an appropriate surgical plan to be made in a timely manner. Large sizes and suspected mucinous borderline ovarian tumors reduced accuracy factors of frozen sections. Primary mucinous carcinoma of the ovary is uncommon, and while numerous studies have focused on improving our ability to distinguish these tumors from gastrointestinal metastases, recent data suggest that up to one fifth are still misdiagnosed with a previously underrecognized culprit: endometrioid carcinoma. Using an index case of an ovarian endometrioid carcinoma with mucinous differentiation masquerading as a mucinous carcinoma, we sought to identify the most efficient biomarker combination that could distinguish these 2 histotypes. Eight immunohistochemical markers were assessed on tissue microarrays from 183 endometri...

ConclusionThese results are largely incompatible with a tumor-suppressive function of LATS in ovarian cancer, and LATS protein level is also not an indicator for drug sensitivity and EMT status of ovarian cancer cells.

This study aimed to elucidate impact of age on the clinicopathologic characteristics and survival of epithelial ovarian neoplasms in the reproductive age.MethodsThe clinical records of patients diagnosed as epithelial ovarian cancer or epithelial borderline ovarian tumor at the age of 40  years or younger at multiple institutions in the Tokai Ovarian Tumor Study Group were reviewed retrospectively. All patients were stratified into two age groups: group A (≤ 30 years) and group B (31–40 years). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate overall survival and disease-free sur...

ConclusionsThis uniquely large and comprehensive meta-analysis confirms that although cigarette smoking does not appear to be a risk factor for ovarian cancer, and  it is even slightly protective for some rare histotypes, there is a strong dose–risk relationship with mucinous ovarian cancer.

CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we report a novel sonographic marker of BOTs termed "microcystic pattern" of their papillary projections, solid components and/or septa. This was seen in the majority of both the serous and the mucinous BOT cases. Importantly, based on comparison of sonographic images and histopathology of both benign entities and malignancies, the microcystic appearance appears to be unique to BOTs. No such or similar description was previously provided. We feel utilization of this new marker will help to correctly identify BOTs, discriminating them from ovarian cancers and benign ovarian pathologies, ...

The objective of this study was to examine differences in clinico-pathological characteristics and outcomes of these two entities. METHODS: This is a retrospective population-based study examining the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program from 1988 to 2000. Stage I mucinous-BOTs and stage I well-differentiated mucinous-OC were compared for patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and outcomes. Propensity score matching and multivariable analysis were used to assess cause-specific survival (CSS). RESULTS: A total of 2130 mucinous-BOT and 581 mucinous-OC cases were examined for analysis. On multiv...

Objective: First, to evaluate the sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) of intra-operative frozen section (FS) diagnosis in borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs), and to explore the factors affecting the diagnostic accuracy. Second, to assess the clinical outcomes of misdiagnosed BOT patients. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of all patients diagnosed as BOT through FS or paraffin section (PS) at Qilu Hospital between January 2005 and December 2015. Clinical and pathologic data were extracted. Univariate analysis was performed using standard two-sided statistical tests. We also performed a meta-analysis to f...
