Antibiograms, created by a facility ’s contracted microbiology laboratory, can help hospitals and nursing homes identify trends in antibiotic resistance and create protocols for empiric antimicrobial therapy. In a recent study conducted in Providence, RI, Maria-Stephanie A. Hughes, PharmD, a fellow at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and colleagues found a lack of agreement between antibiograms of Veterans Affairs (VA) nursing homes and their affiliated acute-care facilities.
