Higher Risk at the Lower End of the Age Spectrum in Brugada Syndrome

Brugada syndrome, a familial arrhythmia syndrome with a characteristic ECG appearance and increased risk for sudden death, is usually diagnosed in middle-aged men.1 Of historical interest, the paper attributed as the original description of Brugada syndrome included 8 patients, 3 of whom were children (2-8 years).2 An earlier paper described comparable ECG findings in 6 patients with “idiopathic” ventricular fibrillation, 3 of whom were children (14-18 years).3 Although children comprised many of the patients in the original reports, Brugada syndrome is indeed rare during childhood.
