“But I wasn’t trying to kill myself!” A teenage patient, admitted to general pediatric service following acetaminophen ingestion, angrily protested when I discussed inpatient psychiatric hospitalization as part of our treatment plan. I acknowledged and validated his disappointment and frustrat ion about yet another hospital stay. However, I also pointed out that his explanation of what he intended to do with taking a whole bottle of acetaminophen, which was to “fall asleep,” still left me worried.
