Abstract 5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) is used as first line therapy for symptom remission and maintenance of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Because 5-ASA is well absorbed from the small intestine when orally administered, several 5-ASA formulations for selective delivery to the colon have been developed and used in clinical practice. However, its delivery efficiency to local inflamed colonic sites remains low. Intestinal H+-coupled oligopeptide transporter 1 (PEPT1) expression in the colon is low, whereas its expression is induced in the colon under chronic inflammation conditions, such as IBD. Therefore, we c...

AbstractThe effect of TNF-blockers on T-lymphocyte subsets is largely unknown in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). The aim of the present study was to analyze the prevalence of T-cell subtypes and their correlation to therapeutic response. Sixty-eight patients with Crohn ’s disease (CD), 46 with ulcerative colitis (UC) were enrolled. (1) The clinical course was followed after the initiation of TNF-blockers (prospective study). (2) The immunophenotype was also compared between long-term anti-TNF treated-responders and non-responders (cross-sectional study). The res ults were compared with those of therapy-naïve...

Authors: Freitas M, Arieira C, Carvalho PB, Rosa B, Moreira MJ, Cotter J Abstract Background: Capsule endoscopy is a widely recognized method to study the small bowel, including in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). The Lewis score (LS) is a valuable tool in this setting, able to assess inflammatory activity. TOP100, a new software tool of the RAPID Reader®, emerged to assist in the time-consuming capsule reading process, by automatically selecting 100 images that will most likely contain abnormalities.Aim: Evaluate the agreement between TOP100 and classic reading (CR) in determining LS in the setting of CD.Me...

We report about a case of azathioprine related pancreatitis associated with polyarthralgia and panniculitis. Pancreatitis, polyarthritis and panniculitis (PPP) syndrome is an uncommon phenomenon which may accompany a number of pancreatic diseases including acute or chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic malignancy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Azathioprine related PPP syndrome. PMID: 32233278 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusions: In this large IBD trial bureau, inflammatory bowel disease patients were very satisfied with the quality of care. Domains for quality improvement, such as attention to the impact of IBD on family and work, were identified. PMID: 32233268 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusions: VDZ offers an effective treatment option in real-life settings and treatment effectiveness appears higher in biologic-naïve versus biologic-failure CD patients. (Acta gastroenterol. belg., 2020, 83, 15-23). PMID: 32233267 [PubMed - in process]
