The purpose of this study was to evaluate practice patterns and outcomes for patients 80 years or older with esophageal cancer using a nationwide cancer database. Practice patterns for patients 80 years or older with stage I-IV esophageal cancer in the National Cancer Database from 2004-2014 were analyzed. Overall survival associated with different treatment strategies were evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. In the study period, 40.5% and 46.2% of patients with stage I adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, respectively, did not receive any treatment at all.

is a lethal condition where 5-year survival remains at about 15%. There are two main subtypes of oesophageal cancer, squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and adenocarcinoma (OAC). OSCC usually affects the middle third of the oesophagus and is associated with smoking, alcohol and low socio-economic status. OAC affects the lower third of the oesophagus and is associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The UK has the highest incidence of OAC in the world and it is rising. Treatment may be palliative or curative.
