Pathophysiological Remarks from the Takayasu Mid-Aortic Syndrome

The interesting case reported by Sugawara et al. concerning with a case of Takayasu mid-aortic syndrome (TAS) merits some pathophysiological remarks.1 A TAS can often complicate with an acute heart failure, differently from the congenital aortic coarctation (AC), outside the neonatal period. This adverse event follows a cascade of pathological mechanisms, starting from an increase in cardiac afterload, due to two main concomitant anatomo-pathological conditions: a widely reduced peripheral arterial network and a decreased arterial compliance, both features of Takayasu disease.
