A Survey of American Thyroid Association Members Regarding the 2015 Adult Thyroid Nodule and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Clinical Practice Guidelines.

CONCLUSIONS: The clinical content and evidence explanations in the adult thyroid nodule and differentiated thyroid cancer CPG are widely accepted and applied among ATA survey respondents. Future ATA CPG updates need to be optimized to best meet users' preferences regarding format, frequency and length. PMID: 31830853 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Lee YK, Hwangbo Y, Lee S, Lee DE, Lee EK, Yeom MS, Joo J, Kong SY Abstract Background While aspirin use is known to be associated with reduced incidence of various cancer types, it is unclear if this benefit extends to thyroid cancer. We aimed to evaluate the association between aspirin use and thyroid cancer development. Methods This nested case-control study used nationwide data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort 2002-2015. In total, 4,547 individuals with newly developed thyroid cancer were matched with 13,641 controls based on age, sex, and follow-up period. Odds r...

Conclusion: Following an initial non-diagnostic FNAB, the probability of yielding a diagnostic result declines with each sequential repeat FNAB. Nonetheless, a tangible possibility of malignancy remains even after repeated non-diagnostic FNABs.  . PMID: 31950884 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Paparodis R, Karvounis E, Bantouna D, Chourpiliadis C, Chourpiliadi H, Livadas S, Imam S, Jaume JC Abstract BACKGROUND: Incidental finding of differentiated thyroid microcarcinomas (DTMc) in patients undergoing thyroid surgery for benign indications, has become increasingly common. Even though carcinogenesis might relate to the background disease of the gland, the incidence of DTMc in the setting of various thyroid disorders remains unclear. We designed the present study to address this question. METHODS: We reviewed data from two prospectively collected databases of consecutive patients undergoing thy...

When I first saw Jea-Hyoun, in a medical meet-cute straight out of a romantic comedy, she was being evaluated for thyroid cancer. I was an allergy/immunology fellow harried by a pile of paperwork. She was a patient, in the same building where she saw patients of her own as a psychiatry and family practice resident, […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.

The objectives of the study were to: (i) Accurately measure the mPTC distance from the thyroid surface; (ii) analyze whether this distance correlates with relevant clinicopathologic parameters; and (iii) investigate the impact of the site of origin of the mPTC on risk stratification. Clinicopathologic features and BRAF mutational status were analyzed and correlated with the site of origin of the mPTC in a multicenter cohort of 298 mPTCs from six Italian medical institutions. Tumors arise at a median distance of 3.5 mm below the surface of the thyroid gland. Statistical analysis identified four distinct clusters. Group A, m...

ConclusionsIn pediatric total thyroidectomies, central neck dissection and gross extrathyroidal extension were major predictors for overall hypoparathyroidism. Surgeons performing thyroidectomy in such patients should be aware of the relatively high risk, preserve parathyroid tissue to the extent possible, and be conscientious regarding postoperative calcium monitoring and replacement.

This study compares survival in patients with the rare subtypes of follicular (FTmC) and Hurthle cell (HCmC) microcarcinoma compared to that of papillary thyroid (PTmC) microcarcinoma.MethodsPatients with FTmC and HCmC were selected from the National Cancer Database 2004 –2015 and compared with PTmC. Patient clinicopathological characteristics and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. Multivariable logistic and Cox regression analysis evaluated binary outcomes and predictors of survival. A propensity score matched analysis using age, gender, race, extrathyroidal ex tension (ETE), nodal status, distant metastasis, radi...
