Authors: Sucker C Abstract Venous thromboembolisms and pulmonary embolisms are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in pregnancy. The increased risk of thrombotic events caused by the physiological changes during pregnancy alone does not justify any medical antithrombotic prophylaxis. However, if there are also other risk factors such as a history of thromboses, hormonal stimulation as part of fertility treatment, thrombophilia, increased age of the pregnant woman, severe obesity or predisposing concomitant illnesses, the risk of thrombosis should be re-evaluated - if possible by a coagulation speciali...

Authors: Berger R, Rath W, Abele H, Garnier Y, Kuon RJ, Maul H Abstract BACKGROUND: The preterm birth rate in Germany has remained unchanged at 8-9% since 2009. Preterm birth is the most common cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. In the absence of a causal treatment, it is important to lower the risk of preterm birth by preventive measures in prenatal outpatient care. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications from the years 2000-2019 that were retrieved by a selective search in PubMed. RESULTS: The clinical risk factors for preterm birth-known mainly from retrospective cohort studies-in...

AbstractIntroductionThe study was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of a combined oral contraceptive, YAZ, containing 3  mg drospirenone/20 μg ethinyl estradiol administered in a 24/4 regimen.MethodsThis was a single-arm, open-label, interventional, post-authorization safety surveillance study of YAZ across 6 treatment cycles. Primary objective was assessing its safety profile in Chinese women. Secondary objectives included assessing contraceptive efficacy, cycle control, and bleeding patterns among subjects with and without preceding abortion, along with efficacy in moderate acne vulgaris. Subgroup ...

In this study, we aimed to analyze the value of annexin-A5 anticoagulant ratio (A5R) and non-criteria antibodies for the diagnosis of APS in patients with clinical  seronegative APS. Three groups were defined, including 21 seronegative APS patients with unexplained obstetrical adverse events or thrombosis history, 15 confirmed APS patients with triple aPL positivity, and a control group of 20 healthy patients without any history of thrombosis or pregnancy com plications. Seronegative APS patients have similar levels of A5R in comparison to healthy controls (202% [171%–238%] versus 191% [178%–221%];p&thinsp...

We report a case of intrauterine death in a fetus with multiple umbilical cord strictures and vascular thrombosis. CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old woman delivered a stillborn female fetus at 33 weeks of gestation. No fetal anomaly was detected. Examination of the umbilical cord showed multiple strictures, located 4.5 cm and 20 cm from the placental insertion site. Microscopically, the stricture site showed Wharton's jelly being replaced by fibrosis with presence of vascular thrombosis. DISCUSSION: Umbilical cord stricture is uncommon and has been described to be associated with intrauterine fetal death and a possibility...

The risk of pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism is high in patients with inherited thrombophilia. The aim of this study was to compare the risk of pregnancy related-venous thromboembolism of women with protein C (PC) deficiency to patients with heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation. 145 consecutive pregnant women with confirmed PC deficiency or heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation were prospectively enrolled in the study. Lyon venous thromboembolism-risk score was used to individually tailor antithrombotic prophylaxis. The use of a validated clinical score presents the advantage to have a homogenous management of the...

Heparin-based anticoagulation for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in pregnant/postpartum women is not without potential risk. We compared measures of postpartum bleeding and resource utilization before and after adoption of a risk-based VTE prophylaxis protocol.
