Trends in Renal Tumor Surgery in the United States and Germany Between 2006 and 2014: Organ Preservation Rate Is Improving.

This study compared the implementation of NSS in the United States and Germany. METHODS: Data were derived from the National Inpatient Sample and from the Nationwide German Hospital Billing Database. All cases of NSS and radical nephrectomy from 2006 to 2014 were analyzed. To assess tumor stage distribution, data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (United States) and from German cancer registries were used. RESULTS: The study identified 74,663 cases in the United States and 130,051 cases in Germany. The proportion of NSS for T1 tumors increased from 30.6 to 57% in the United States compared with 38.5 to 72.9% (estimation) in Germany (p

ConclusionAfrican-American race is associated with prolonged survival in non-ccmRCC, but it is also associated with lower survival rates in ccmRCC. The exception to these observations consisted of patients treated with combination of CNT  + ST for either ccmRCC or non-ccmRCC.

AbstractIn this article, we review de state of the art on the management of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and provide recommendations on diagnosis and treatment. Recent advances in molecular biology have allowed the subclassification of renal tumours into different histologic variants and may help to identify future prognostic and predictive factors. For patients with localized disease, surgery is the treatment of choice with nephron-sparing surgery recommended when feasible. No adjuvant therapy has demonstrated a clear benefit in overall survival. Considering the whole population of patients with advanced disease, the combin...

Abstract OBJECTIVES: Surgically treated clinical T1 (cT1) kidney cancer has in general a good prognosis, but there is a risk of upstaging that can potentially jeopardize the oncological outcomes after partial nephrectomy (PN). Aim of this study is to analyze the outcomes of robot-assisted PN (RAPN) for cT1 kidney cancer upstaged to pT3a, and to identify predictors of upstaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study cohort included 1,640 cT1 patients who underwent RAPN between 2005 and 2018 at 10 academic institutions. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to assess the predictors of upstaging. Kaplan-Mei...

e Rha Cho Ham The molecular characteristics of early-stage clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCCs) measuring ≤7 cm associated with poor clinical outcomes remain poorly understood. Here, we sought to validate genes associated with ccRCC progression and identify candidate genes to predict ccRCC aggressiveness. From among 1069 nephrectomies performed on patients, RNA sequencing was performed for 12 ccRCC patients with aggressive characteristics and matched pairs of 12 ccRCC patients without aggressive characteristics. Using a prospective cohort (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03694912), the expression...

Conclusions: The presence of an ectopic, pelvic disposition of the kidney makes it susceptible to be invaded by locally advanced pelvic tumors; in such cases, a nephrectomy might also be needed. PMID: 31952297 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSIONS: Tumor stage and its substages represent extremely important determinants of prognosis after lengthy event-free follow-up. The recorded observations have critical importance for physicians regarding patient follow-up and counseling. PMID: 31910387 [PubMed - in process]

In this study, we report a case of renal metastasis from ICC. A 72-year-old man who had been followed-up for chronic hepatitis C was diagnosed with ICC in the segment 8 and underwent S8 segmentectomy in 2014. During follow-up, the serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 were slightly elevated, and abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a low-density mass preceded by rim enhancement in the arterial phase measuring 1.5  × 1.5 cm in the segment 6, and a hypovascular mass measuring 2.2 × 2.0 cm in the upper pole of the left kidne...

In response to MCP-1 treatment, CRL1932 cells and xenograft tumors expressed MCP-1-induced protein (MCPIP) which was reported to cause endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced apoptosis in human cardiomyocytes. In line with MCPIP induction, the expression of ER stress mediators, such as GRP78, PERK, IRE1 α, and PDI, as well as molecules involved in ER stress-induced apoptosis, CHOP, calnexin, and Ero1α,...
