E. coli outbreak linked to Fresh Express salads sickens 8 people

A dangerous new E. coli outbreak is linked to Salinas, California, a city known as the Salad Bowl of the World. At least eight people in three states have become ill. It's not clear if these cases are linked to a recent, more widespread outbreak from contaminated romaine lettuce that sickened 102 people in 23 states. Jonathan Vigliotti reports.

ConclusionsOur large genomic study highlights distinct differences in the molecular epidemiology ofE. coli andKlebsiella BSIs and suggests that no single specific pathogen genetic factors (e.g. AMR/virulence genes/sequence type) are likely contributing to the increasing incidence of BSI overall, that association with AMR genes inE. coli is a contributor to the increasing number ofE. coli BSIs, and that more attention should be given to AMR gene associations with non-plasmid MGEs to try and understand horizontal gene transfer networks.
