Could a hot 'lipstick' end the misery of cold sores?

A German-engineered device, which is the size and shape of a lipstick, may help those infected with the HSV-1 virus, which causes cold sores.

ae-Ho Hwang Oncolytic viruses are a promising class of anti-tumor agents; however, concerns regarding uncontrolled viral replication have led to the development of a replication-controllable oncolytic vaccinia virus (OVV). The engineering involves replacing the native thymidine kinase (VV-tk) gene, in a Wyeth strain vaccinia backbone, with the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-tk) gene, which allows for viral replication control via ganciclovir (GCV, an antiviral/cytotoxic pro-drug). Adding the wild-type HSV-tk gene might disrupt the tumor selectivity of VV-tk deleted OVVs; therefore, only engineered viruses t...

In conclusion, our data extend and strengthen recent findings reporting the reduction of mDC migration in the context of a herpesviral infection. We thus hypothesize that hampering antigen delivery to secondary lymphoid organs by inhibition of mDC migration is an evolutionary conserved strategy among distinct members of Herpesviridae.

Conclusions This survey collected important information on PHL STD laboratory testing practices. Capacity for important reference laboratory testing, such as GC culture and antimicrobial susceptibility, are needed to support STD programs. Public health laboratories play a key role in STD screening, surveillance, and prevention by offering test methods that are not available at commercial laboratories. Funding constraints affect the resources available for STD screening and surveillance, and thus, it is important to continue to monitor testing practices and the capacity of PHLs to test for STDs.

ConclusionThere were high positive rates of HSV-1, HSV-2, and CMV DNA in recipient corneas and aqueous humor at the time of PKP, even among patients not suspected of latent viral infection. The presence of aqueous HSV-1 DNA was associated with higher risk of graft failure.

CONCLUSIONS: The ex vivo nasal polyp organ culture reproduces the physiological, metabolic, and cellular features of nasal polyps. Furthermore, it shows a preserved capacity for viral infection and response to drugs. This system is a useful tool for the investigation nasal-polyps and for the development of novel therapies. (Molecular Biology and Evolution (Oxford University Press)) An Italian research team has refined the history and origins of two extremely common pathogens in human populations, herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2. Using and applying rather precise data methods they estimated that the circulating strains of herpes simplex virus type 1 migrated from Africa about 5000 years ago. The exit from Africa of herpes simplex virus type 2 was even more recent and probably occurred in the eighteenth century, during the height of the slave trade.

ConclusionsA linear pontine trigeminal root lesion was observed in a patient with anti ‐MOG antibody‐associated encephalitis. The association of herpesviruses requires more attention in the pathogenesis of anti‐MOG antibody‐associated encephalitis.

CONCLUSION: Herpes simplex virus hepatitis causes significant morbidity, and pregnant women are susceptible to severe infections. Pregnant or peripartum women with acute febrile hepatitis require prompt evaluation for HSV with serum PCR screening. PMID: 31923059 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

d K Abstract One of the essential steps in every viral 'life' cycle is entry into the host cell. Membrane-enveloped viruses carry dedicated proteins to catalyse the fusion of the viral and cellular membrane. Herpesviruses feature a set of essential, structurally diverse glycoproteins on the viral surface that form a multicomponent fusion machinery, necessary for the entry mechanism. For Herpes simplex virus 1, these essential glycoproteins are gD, gH, gL and gB. In this review we describe the functions of the individual components, the potential interactions between them as well as the influence of post-translatio...
