Letter to the Editor

We thank the Editor for inviting us to respond to a Letter to the Editor by Dr. Liew1 which refers to our paper “Exposure to Antidepressant Medication and the Risk of Incident Dementia”.2 Dr. Liew raised the issue of confounding by indication in the association between antidepressant exposure and the risk of dementia. Confounding by indication occurs when the indication(s) (e.g., depression) for prescribi ng a medication (e.g., antidepressants) is potentially associated with the outcome (e.g., dementia), and so when not adequately adjusted for, the indication may make a spurious association between the medication and outcome.
