In this issue of the Journal, Ditkowski and colleagues,1 through an elaborate series of in  vitro experiments, present compelling evidence for the prominent role of platelets and fibrinogen in the development of Staphylococcus aureus infective endocarditis (IE) of biologic heart valve conduits.1 Specifically, they focus on the complex interaction of Staphylococcus clumping factor A (ClfA ), fibrinogen, platelet αIIbβ3 receptors, and platelet adenosine diphosphate receptors as modulators of bacterial adhesion on various graft tissues.

Discussion Until now, the main tool used for bacterial identification based on NGS of the 16S–23S rRNA encoding region was de novo assembly followed by BLASTN on NCBI database (Sabat et al., 2017), however, there was no evidence that it would be the most accurate and/or fastest method available. CONCLUSION:This study is the first to suggest that despite the high prevalence of Viridans Group Streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus in patients with AML undergoing chemotherapy, echocardiographic findings of IE in these patients are rare, with the notable exception of Enterococcal and Non-HACEK gram negative organisms.
