Never before has it been more exciting and important to be a neurologist

What are the current trends and hot topics in neurology? The increasing insights into the genetics and molecular bases of neurological disorders open new perspectives for specific and personalized treatments. This is evidenced most dramatically by the antisense therapy for spinal muscular atrophy. Promising neurological research currently targets neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Duchenne muscular atrophy, or Huntington’s disease. Likewise, brain-machine interfaces and neuroprosthetics offer huge potential. Never before has it been more important and more exciting to be a neurologist! Neurological Research and Practice is celebrating its 1st anniversary of the submission system launch. As the Past President and one of the main drivers for the society’s own English-language open access journal, what has the journal achieved so far? Are you happy with the progress you are seeing now? Within only one year, a new journal has been established with a regular publication schedule of already 3 -4 articles per month with the first articles being published in February 2019. The article accesses of research articles, e.g., “Safety and clinical impact of FEES – results of the FEES registry”, or review articles, e.g., “Navigating choice in multiple sclerosis management”, demonstrate that the topics covered in the journal meet the readers’ interests. In addition to review and research...

Using the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of myricitrin (MYC), the present study was conducted in order to investigate the neuroprotection effects of MYC in kainic acid (KA) induced- TLE experimental model.Forty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: 1: Sham, 2: MYC, 3: TLE (epileptic group), 4: VA + TLE (valproic acid and KA ...

Conclusions: In this cohort of patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, both traditional and disease related risk factors were predictive of cardiovascular events. Further prospective studies should elucidate the impact of these and other modifiable risk factors on cardiovascular risk in ANCA-associated vasculitis.

ConclusionsDelayed treatment start in this POMS cohort was associated with shorter time to reach sustained EDSS 4 and confirmed EDSS worsening, and decreased chance of reaching confirmed EDSS improvement, and thus support early treatment start in POMS patients.

In this study, we assessed the impact of interacting medication and pharmacogenetic variation to better explain apixaban concentration differences among 358 Caucasian AF patients. Genotyping (ABCG2,ABCB1,CYP3A4*22,CYP3A5*3) was performed by TaqMan assays, and apixaban quantified by mass spectrometry. The typical patient was on average 77.2  years old, 85.5 kg, and had a serum creatinine of 103.1 µmol/L. Concomitant amiodarone, an antiarrhythmic agent and moderate CYP3A/ABCB1 inhibitor, the impaired-function variantABCG2 c.421C  >  A, and sex predicted higher apixaban concentrations whe...

Conclusion Negative attitudes towards abortion have increased in Western and Eastern Germany during the two decades following reunification and may harm women by limiting acceptability and accessibility of abortion care. Abortion policies, public discourse and provision of abortion care should be informed by international guidelines protecting women's health and rights. PMID: 31949323 [PubMed]

Conclusion Data collection was successful for both the qualitative and quantitative parts of the study. When interpreting the results of STEP, different limitations should be taken into account. The results of STEP provide starting points for the development of tailored preventive measures for pregnant women. PMID: 31949321 [PubMed]

Authors: Strieth S, Hagemann J, Hess M Abstract Transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) for treatment of laryngeal cancer has reduced temporary tracheotomies, increased organ preservation rates, and improved functional results. Gold standard for laser-based transoral resection of laryngeal cancer is the application of CO2 lasers. Oncologically safe radical resection and postoperative voice outcome must be weighed up individually. Angiolytic laser effects enable modification of the tumor micromilieu by targeted obliteration of microvessels and antagonization of angiogenesis with preservation of vibrating laryngeal tissue...

CONCLUSIONS: All patients with a suspected contact allergy should receive a guideline-based patch test at an early stage. Targeted patch testing identifies clinically relevant allergens and provides suggestions for further systematic investigations. PMID: 31950209 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
