AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review aims to summarize epidemiological literature published between May 15, 2018, and May 14, 2019, that examines the relationship between exposure to synthetic pesticides and health of agricultural workers.Recent FindingsCurrent research suggests that exposure to synthetic pesticides may be associated with adverse health outcomes. Agricultural workers represent a potentially vulnerable population, due to a combination of unique social and cultural risk factors as well as exposure to hazards inherent in agricultural work. Pesticide exposure among agricultural workers has been linked to certa...

We described the first Italian experience with Afirma tests in a single Italian institution and assessed the performance of the Afirma test in TIR3B. Moreover, this is a preliminary study to assess the patient response to the offer of Afirma testing. The Afirma test was proposed to 67 patients with thyroid nodules that had yielded TIR3B cytology. Fifty-one patients (76.1%) chose the Afirma test, 25/51 underwent the test but the remaining 26 did not because of cost. A total of 41/67 (61.2%) patients underwent surgery, and 22/41 (53.7%) nodules were carcinomas. Of the 25 tested by Afirma, 9 (36%) were classified as Afirma-su...

Authors: Lee YK, Hwangbo Y, Lee S, Lee DE, Lee EK, Yeom MS, Joo J, Kong SY Abstract Background While aspirin use is known to be associated with reduced incidence of various cancer types, it is unclear if this benefit extends to thyroid cancer. We aimed to evaluate the association between aspirin use and thyroid cancer development. Methods This nested case-control study used nationwide data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort 2002-2015. In total, 4,547 individuals with newly developed thyroid cancer were matched with 13,641 controls based on age, sex, and follow-up period. Odds r...

Authors: Paparodis R, Karvounis E, Bantouna D, Chourpiliadis C, Chourpiliadi H, Livadas S, Imam S, Jaume JC Abstract BACKGROUND: Incidental finding of differentiated thyroid microcarcinomas (DTMc) in patients undergoing thyroid surgery for benign indications, has become increasingly common. Even though carcinogenesis might relate to the background disease of the gland, the incidence of DTMc in the setting of various thyroid disorders remains unclear. We designed the present study to address this question. METHODS: We reviewed data from two prospectively collected databases of consecutive patients undergoing thy...

She was a patient, in the same building where she saw patients of her own as a psychiatry and family practice resident, […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.

The objectives of the study were to: (i) Accurately measure the mPTC distance from the thyroid surface; (ii) analyze whether this distance correlates with relevant clinicopathologic parameters; and (iii) investigate the impact of the site of origin of the mPTC on risk stratification. Clinicopathologic features and BRAF mutational status were analyzed and correlated with the site of origin of the mPTC in a multicenter cohort of 298 mPTCs from six Italian medical institutions. Tumors arise at a median distance of 3.5 mm below the surface of the thyroid gland. Statistical analysis identified four distinct clusters. Group A, m...
