Estimation of heritability and familial correlation in myopia is not affected by past sun exposure.

Estimation of heritability and familial correlation in myopia is not affected by past sun exposure. Ophthalmic Genet. 2019 Dec 06;:1-7 Authors: Charng J, Sanfilippo PG, Lingham G, Stevenson LJ, Mackey DA, Yazar S Abstract Purpose: To consider the effect of including past sun exposure in estimating heritability and familial correlation of myopia-related traits. Methods: We calculate familial correlation and heritability of anterior chamber depth (ACD), axial length (AL), corneal curvature (CC), and spherical equivalent (SphE), with or without past sun exposure as a covariate, in a large number of unrelated nuclear families from the Raine Study (parents: Gen1, offspring: Gen2) residing in Perth, Australia, a city with a high amount of daily sunlight. Past sun exposure was objectively measured using conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) photography. Results: When sun exposure was not included in the analysis, both familial correlation (correlation±SE; ACD: 0.308 ± 0.065, AL: 0.374 ± 0.061, CC: 0.436 ± 0.063, SphE: 0.281 ± 0.070) and heritability (ACD: 0.606 ± 0.104, AL: 0.623 ± 0.098, CC: 0.793 ± 0.079, SphE: 0.591 ± 0.106) were significant for all traits (all P

The aim of this study is to investigate the association between computer use and myopia in the context of other near work activities.Within the birth cohort study Generation R, we studied 5074 children born in Rotterdam between 2002 and 2006. Refractive error and axial length was...

Examination suggested left heavy eye syndrome, and it was confirmed the patient had high axial myopia before her cataract surgeries. Both nasal displacement of the left superior rectus muscle and inferior displacement of the left lateral rectus muscle were noted intraoperati...

Due to high prevalence myopia has gained importance in epidemiological studies. Children with early onset are at particular risk of complications associated with myopia, as progression over time might result i...

CONCLUSIONS: Antimuscarinic topical medication is effective in slowing myopia progression in children. Multifocal lenses, either spectacles or contact lenses, may also confer a small benefit. Orthokeratology contact lenses, although not intended to modify refractive error, were more effective than SVLs in slowing axial elongation. We found only low or very low-certainty evidence to support RGPCLs and sperical aberration SCLs. PMID: 31930781 [PubMed - in process]

Alex NowrastehOn Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) sent a letter to Secretary of State Pompeo stating that Texas would not accept any refugees going forward. Governor Abbott is the first governor to request that refugees not be settled in his state since President Trump announced thatstates and localities would now have to opt in to receive refugees. Texas was the first state to refuse refugees after 42 other states decided to continue to accept them.Trump ’s new executive order requires states and localities to opt in to accept refugees, which is a clear ploy to get them to refuse. There’s no good reason ...

ConclusionExcimer laser vision correction among ophthalmologists in Saudi is much higher than the market penetration in the general population reported in other countries. Most of the ophthalmologists who underwent the procedure were satisfied with the outcome.

AbstractTo evaluate the postoperative higher-order aberration (HOA) differences and visual quality outcomes of wavefront-optimised photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) surgery in 6.5-mm and 7.0-mm optic zones. The study included 136 eyes of 68 patients who underwent wavefront-optimised PRK surgery for myopia or myopia with astigmatism.Q values, third-order coma (Z [3, 1] andZ [3, − 1]), third-order trefoil (Z [3] andZ [3, − 3]), fourth-order spherical aberration (Z [4, 0]) and aberration coefficients were evaluated before surgery and 6  months after surgery. All patients underwent ophthalmic exa...
