Causes and predictors of readmission after transcatheter aortic valve implantation : A  meta-analysis and systematic review.

CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis found cardiovascular factors to be the main causes for both 30-day and 1‑year rehospitalization. Heart failure represented the most common cardiovascular event at both short-term and mid-term follow-up. Several baseline characteristics and procedure-related factors were deemed unfavorable predictors of readmission. Importantly, transfemoral access and female gender were associated with a lower risk of readmission. PMID: 31807789 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AbstractTransjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) represents a very effective treatment of complications of portal hypertension. Established indications to TIPS in cirrhotic patients include portal hypertensive bleeding and refractory ascites. Over the years additional indications have been proposed, such as the treatment of vascular disease of the liver, hepatic hydrothorax, hepatorenal syndrome and bleeding from ectopic varices. Indications under evaluation include treatment of portal hypertension prior to major abdominal surgery and treatment of portal vein thrombosis. In spite of these advances, there are st...

Abbott Laboratories has won a nod from FDA for a new alternative surgical technique for the HeartMate 3 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). This technique will not only allow more advanced heart failure patients the opportunity to avoid open-heart surgery, but it will help advance the firm's position in the LVAD market.  Dublin-based Medtronic won the same designation for the HVAD in 2018. Abbott said the HeartMate 3 heart pump can now be implanted through an incision in the chest wall. The new FDA nod for HeartMate 3 is based on two studies – the ELEVATE study: a multi-center, voluntary, o...

We must ensure their relevance to contemporary patient care By LONNY REISMAN, MD It’s 1992 and disruptive technologies of the day are making headlines: AT&T releases the first color videophone; scientists start accessing the World Wide Web; Apple launches the PowerBook Duo. In healthcare, with less fanfare, a Harvard physician named Dr. Burton “Bud” Rose converts his entire nephrology textbook onto a floppy disk, launching the clinical tool that would ultimately become UpToDate. Instead of flipping through voluminous medical reference texts, such as the Washington Manual, doctors could for th...

Abstract The incorporation of biomarkers in the actually used risk scores seem to be helpful for early identifying atrial fibrillation (AF) patients at higher risk. The aim of this critical review of the scientific literature is to investigate the potential clinical significance of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in AF. A systematic electronic search was carried out to identify all articles describing an epidemiological association between RDW and AF in adult human populations. Data abstraction was conducted on a final number of 35 articles (13 cross-sectional, 12 prospective and 10 retrospective studies)....

Abstract BACKGROUND: The clinical efficacy of ticagrelor is questionable in East Asian populations. Patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with multivessel disease (MVD) are considered as high risk patients who might benefit from ticagrelor treatment. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical effect of ticagrelor and clopidogrel in AMI patients with MVD in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 2275 patients between November 2011 and June 2015, diagnosed with AMI with MVD after successful percutaneous coronary intervention who were registered in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Regist...
