What's new in obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome.
What's new in obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome. Hematology Am Soc Hematol Educ Program. 2019 Dec 06;2019(1):421-425 Authors: Branch DW Abstract Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a rare systemic autoimmune disease, the obstetric features of which include recurrent early miscarriage, fetal death at or beyond 10 weeks of gestation, and early delivery for severe preeclampsia or placental insufficiency. Controversies regarding the specificity of these obstetric clinical features, as well as the laboratory diagnostic criteria, are the subject of current debate and reanalysis. Clinical and laboratory features can be used to stratify women with APS in terms of risk of adverse second and third trimester pregnancy outcomes. Numerous "treatments" have been used in high-risk and refractory patients, but rigorously designed clinical trials are needed. APS is a rare disease that requires innovative investigative approaches to provide credible results. PMID: 31808896 [PubMed - in process]
How bad of an idea is it to be pregnant with adequate lead coverage during early months of pregnancy? I had a fellow resident who was pregnant who changed her rotations around to avoid any exposure, however it's my understanding that overall the exposure with adequate coverage is ultimately fine. I know most of you are men - not sure if there are any female pain docs who could chime in? Sigh.
ConclusionThree unhealthy TCM patterns during the preconception period might be risk factors for low fecundity or poor pregnancy outcomes. The TCM preconception pattern identification may provide a convenient and effective way to screen for potential pregnancy risks beyond the NFPC. Further, appropriate interventions based on the TCM preconception health patterns are needed to improve quality in women’s fecundability and birth outcomes.
We describe recent female sterilization and reversible prescription contraceptive method use by presence of CHD and CHD severity in 2014.MethodsUsing IBM MarketScan Commercial Databases, we included women aged 15–44 years with prescription drug coverage in 2014 who were enrolled ≥11 months annually in employer-sponsored health plans between 2011–2014. CHD, CHD severity, contraceptive methods, and obstetric-gynecology and cardiology provider encounters were identified using billing codes. We used log-binomial regression to calculate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs...
Conclusion: MMP-3 rs35068180 polymorphism may modulate RPL risk in Iranian women. There is no evidence to suggest that MMP-2 (rs243865, rs2285053) and MMP 9 (rs3918242, rs17576) polymorphisms are associated with RPL risk. PMID: 31955640 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Publication date: Available online 20 January 2020Source: Methods in MicrobiologyAuthor(s): Maria M. Plummer, Charles S. PaviaAbstractImmunoassay detection of specific antigens and host-produced antibodies directed against such antigens constitute two of the most widely used and successful methods for diagnosing infectious diseases and many of the non-infectious autoimmune disorders. We will be reviewing some of the epidemiology, microbiology, and clinical aspects of selected organisms and discuss their diagnosis by describing some of the major antigen detection systems and serologic techniques available to health care pro...
BOSTON (CBS/CNN) – A new Chinese coronavirus, a cousin of the SARS virus, has infected more than 200 people since the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December. Boston’s Logan Airport is not currently screening passengers for the illness, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection told WBZ-TV. That’s because there are no direct flights to Boston from that region. Additional health screening for coronavirus is in place at JFK Airport in New York, San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. The agency said the CDC has determined that coronavirus presents a low risk to the...
