Phonomotor Versus Semantic Feature Analysis Treatment for Anomia in 58 Persons With Aphasia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Discussion Our results are consistent with those of prior studies that have shown that SFA treatment and phonomotor treatment generalize to untrained words that share features (semantic or phonological sequence, respectively) with the training set. However, they show that there is no significant generalization to untrained words that do not share semantic features or phonological sequence features. Conclusions: Describing the content of conversation therapy with the taxonomy of behaviour change techniques offers clinically useful insights with potential to enhance both research and practice. The intervention is shown to target different types of behaviour in different ways, and offer different speaker groups different content. Non-psychologist users of the taxonomy may encounter challenges working with unfamiliar concepts and terminology, which may impact on reliable use.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONIn order to change communicative behaviours within conversation, feedback should focus not only on performance but al...

Conclusions: Patients with neglect or aphasia, especially aphasia with comprehension deficits, short after stroke have significant worse functional outcome.Implications for rehabilitationClinicians should perform an extensive screening for neglect, aphasia, and cognitive disorders to make sure to diagnose the different neuropsychological disorders correctly. When patients with neuropsychological disorders are referred for rehabilitation, it can be expected that they need a longer rehabilitation period or may never reach the same level of functioning.Clinicians should pay attention to instructions of training moments outside...

Abstract How do health and social care professionals deal with undecipherable talk produced by adults with intellectual disabilities (ID)? Some of their practices are familiar from the other-initiated repair canon. But some practices seem designed for, or at least responsive to, the needs of the institutional task at hand, rather than those of difficult-to-understand conversational partners. One such practice is to reduce the likelihood of the person with ID issuing any but the least repair-likely utterances, or indeed having to speak at all. If they do produce a repairable turn, then, as foreshadowed by earlier w...

We report two consanguineous families with probands that exhibit intellectual disability, developmental delay, short stature, aphasia, and hypotonia in which homozygous non-synonymous variants were identified in IQSEC1 (GenBank: NM_001134382.3). In a Pakistani family, the IQSEC1 segregating variant is c.1028C>T (p.Thr343Met), while in a Saudi Arabian family the variant is c.962G>A (p.Arg321Gln). IQSEC1-3 encode guanine nucleotide exchange factors for the small GTPase ARF6 and their loss affects a variety of actin-dependent cellular processes, including AMPA receptor trafficking at synapses.

Conclusions: EMS notification is influenced by AF, stroke severity, psychiatric disease, aphasia, and residence type. Early disability depends on age, the type and severity of the stroke, and pre-stroke mRS. Predictors of disability at 1 year after stroke are age, stoke severity, mRS at discharge, and recurrent ischemic stroke. Higher NIHSS and older age are associated with higher case fatality. In patients ineligible for recanalization, EMS notification had no significant effect on outcome, regarding both disability and survival.

Conclusions: This literature domain currently provides an unclear picture as to how memory limitations affect participation in stroke and stroke-related aphasia. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION A broad range of subjective memory measures have been used to determine stroke survivors' perceptions of their everyday memory issues. Because of psychometric weaknesses such as inadequate reliability and cross-cultural validity among subjective memory measures, there remains a need to carefully review a given measure's properties to determine if it is appropriate for use with a given stroke survivor. Stroke survivors with aphasia h...

ConclusionCCDs are highly prevalent and represented the largest subtype of communication disorders in this cohort. FIMFAM scores appear useful in assessing CCDs however they display insufficient sensitivity in capturing change within this population. This audit highlights the need for further interdisciplinary research, education and training into cognitive-communication difficulties with post-stroke populations.

Conclusions: The findings indicate ICT-delivered aphasia rehabilitation is considered an acceptable mode of rehabilitation by people with aphasia who reported generally positive feedback, though variation among personal perspectives and experience is noted. There is currently no consensus measure of self-reported feedback in ICT-delivered aphasia rehabilitation. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION ICT-delivered aphasia rehabilitation may provide an acceptable mode of rehabilitation for people with aphasia. Exploring self-reported feedback from people with aphasia engaging in ICT-delivered aphasia rehabilitation will provide in...

We performed a retrospective, case-control study in consecutive ischemic stroke patients admitted to our stroke rehabilitation unit. Patients were matched for severity of neurological impairment (evaluated with the Canadian Neurological Scale, CNS), age (difference within 1 year) and onset admission interval (difference within 3 days). Participants were divided into two subgroups according to the presence or absence of PSD. Aim was to assess the specific influence of post-stroke depression (PSD) and antidepressant treatment on both basal functional status and rehabilitation outcomes. All PSD patients were treated primarily...
