Grams, Josef Coresh, Alex Chang, Kunihiro MatsushitaRationale &ObjectiveInfluenza vaccination is recommended for all adults but particularly for older adults and those with high-risk conditions. Reduced kidney function is an important high-risk condition, but the effectiveness of influenza vaccination across kidney function is uncharacterized. We assessed the effectiveness of influenza vaccination among older adults with and without reduced kidney function.Study DesignObservational cohort study.Setting &Participants454,634 person-seasons among 110,968 individuals 65 years or older in the Geisinger Health System between the 2005 and 2015 influenza seasons, with baseline characteristics matched between those with and without vaccination using inverse probability weighting.ExposuresStatus of influenza vaccination.OutcomesIncident hospitalization with pneumonia/influenza, coronary heart disease, and heart failure during influenza season stratified by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; ≥ 60, 30-59, and

Publication date: Available online 17 January 2020Source: Veterinary ParasitologyAuthor(s): Pengfei Zhao, Yuncan Li, Yanqin Zhou, Junlong Zhao, Rui FangAbstractEimeria tenella, belonging to protozoon, is the causative agent of cecal coccidiosis in chicken and causes enormous impacts for poultry industry. The surface antigens of apicomplexan parasites function as attachment and invasion in host-parasite interaction. Meanwhile, host immune response is triggered as a result of parasitic invasion. Immunogenicity and potency as a vaccinal candidate antigen of E. tenella surface antigen 4 (EtSAG4) have been unknown. Therefore, a...

ConclusionsThis study demonstrated a vital role of calpain in ECs for inducing myocardiocyte hypertrophy, cell death and the EndMT via the HSP90/Akt signaling pathway, thereby promoting cardiac fibrosis. The results indicate that inhibiting ECs calpain is a novel therapeutic target to retard cardiac fibrosis and has positive effects on heart failure.Graphical abstract

This study adds to the body of evidence in describing incidence and type of cardiac events experienced by an allogeneic and autologous HSCT population at one institution from 2012-2017. Sixty-five patients (9.8%) experienced cardiac events, including atrial arrhythmia (N = 39), acute heart failure (N = 9), acute coronary syndrome (N = 7), new onset hypertension (N = 9), with a few instances of bradycardia, ventricular arrhythmia, pericardial effusion, and pericarditis. Our multivariable regression analysis identified age (older), creatinine (higher) and history of coronary artery disease to significantly correlate with ris...
