Methotrexate in the treatment of paediatric alopecia areata: Retrospective case series and updated meta-analysis.

CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this study shows that methotrexate for paediatric AA in an Australian context was beneficial for the majority of cases assessed and had minimal adverse effects. We propose that such treatment should not be ruled out in the paediatric population. PMID: 31802478 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

We report a 14 years-old young man with walked unstably, bilateral strephenopodia, severe alopecia and paroxysmal bilateral upper limbs tremor without obvious muscle atrophy. Diagnostic whole-exome sequencing revealed a hemizygote missense mutation c.278 T > A in exon 2 of the GJB1 gene, with lysine at position 93 of the mature protein (p.M93K). This is the first CMT case with alopecia areata reported in the world.

CONCLUSIONS: We recommend the use of the SALT to assess the extent (0-100%) of scalp hair loss. Using the SALT assessment, the AA-IGA™ is a robust ordinal measure providing distinct and clinically meaningful gradations of scalp hair loss that reflects patients' and expert clinicians' perspectives and treatment expectations. AbstractThe coexistence of alopecia areata (AA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been described, but the association between these conditions is yet to be firmly established. We aimed to evaluate the association between AA and SLE using a large-scale real-life computerized database. A cross-sectional study was conducted comparing the prevalence of SLE among patients with AA and among age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched control subjects. Chi-square andt tests were used for univariate analysis, and a logistic regression model was used for multivariate analysis. The study was performed utilizing the computerized datab...

Abstract Tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells are increasingly associated with the outcomes of health and disease. TRM cells can mediate local immune protection against infections and cancer, which has led to interest in TRM cells as targets for vaccination and immunotherapies. However, these cells have also been implicated in mediating detrimental pro-inflammatory responses in autoimmune skin diseases such as psoriasis, alopecia areata, and vitiligo. Here, we summarize the biology of TRM cells established in animal models and in translational human studies. We review the beneficial effects of TRM cells in mediati...

In a moving interview with The Root, Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley opened up about living with alopecia and revealed that she has gone completely bald. Pressley, 45, said she decided to go public about her hair loss because she felt she owed an explanation to all the women of color who have reached out to her about what had become known as her signature hairstyle: Senegalese twists. She added that she decided to open up about going bald “to be freed from the secret, and the shame that that secret carries with it.” “I’m not here just to occupy space,” she also said. “I’m here t...

ConclusionOur findings suggested different urinary polyamine, androgen, and bile acid concentrations between alopecia areata patients and normal controls. Additionally, levels of endogenous substances varied according to sex, and this should be considered when developing appropriate treatments and diagnostic techniques. Our findings improve our  understanding of polyamine, androgen, and bile acid profiles in patients with alopecia areata and highlight the need to consider sex-related differences.
