The therapeutic effects of Stauntonia hexaphylla in benign prostate hyperplasia are mediated by the regulation of androgen receptors and 5α-reductase type 2

ConclusionsIt was observed that extracts of S. hexaphylla inhibited both 5α -reductase type 2 and ARs. The results indicate that the use of S. hexaphylla extract in BPH is probably beneficial through 5α-reductase inhibition and α-adrenergic receptor blockade. In addition, apoptosis and autophagy were induced, and PCNA was downregulated after S. hexaphylla treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded that S. hexaphylla has a therapeutic effect on BPH.Graphical abstract

Conclusions Aging leads to a progressive decrease in androgen production that, in turn, leads to the development of LOH, defined by significant low T serum levels (in the lowest quartile) in the presence of signs and symptoms of hypogonadism (51). LOH could be due to both testicular and hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction (32), and ED is one of its main symptoms. ED in LOH is linked to increased oxidative stress, subclinical inflammation, and subsequent endothelial dysfunction (101). In elderly men, it has been shown that LOH is also linked to lower cAMP pool and to an alteration of the cGMP signaling pathway. PDE5 gene l...

ConclusionsPatients with benign prostatic hyperplasia exhibited an increased risk of developing vertebral compression fractures in both the thoracic and lumbar spine and also hip fractures, but did not increase the risk of wrist fracture. However, more research is needed to confirm this trend in the clinical setting.

In this study, we explored the ephrinA2 expression in whole serum and tissues and identified the circulating exosomal ephrinA2 as a potential biomarker for PCa. Exosomes were isolated from patient sera by differential centrifugation and the presence of ephrinA2 was confirmed via electron microscopy and western blotting. The type of ephrinA2 in serum was evaluated by western blotting. The expression of serum ephrinA2 including secreted and cleaved ephrinA2 and exosomal ephrinA2 were detected by ELISA and western blotting. Compared with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and controls, the levels of whole serum ephrinA2 and e...

Conclusion: In a clinical practice setting, the majority of patients with moderate airflow limitation had significant comorbidities that were more common in more symptomatic ones. Since comorbidities have impact on patient outcomes, there is a need for careful identification and management of these, especially in the more symptomatic COPD patients.

The study objective was to investigate the association of polypharmacy and medications with patient falls resulting in hip fractures among community-living geriatric patients. A case–control study was conducted at an acute public hospital in Hong Kong. The study population was community-living Chinese patients aged 65 years and above who were admitted for falls resulting in hip fractures during an 18-month study period. Each of these patients was matched to a control patient with the same age and sex, but without falls and fractures. Data were collected from electronic patient record. Data of 170 cases and 170 contro...
