Novel smartphone assisted device for neurotargeting.

CONCLUSIONS: This smartphone application coupled with targeting device can be used in various settings such as EVD placement in hydrocephalus and in other brain targeting candidates in emergency settings. Also, it may be used in any emergency or neurosurgery department centers with no access to advanced neuro-imaging facilities, only using patient's simple cranial measures to achieve acceptable and highly accurate brain targeting compared with conventional, time consuming and costly techniques. We plan to expand this study to clinical trials for further evaluation. PMID: 31802048 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Araujo-Castro M, Berrocal VR, Pascual-Corrales E Abstract Pituitary tumors (PTs) are a heterogeneous group of lesions of the central nervous system that are usually benign. Most of them occur sporadically, but 5% can do so within family syndromes, usually at a young age. There are differences by sex, age, race, and genetic factors in the prevalence of different tumor cell types and clinical presentation. Functioning-PTs (FPTs) are usually diagnosed earlier than non-functioning PTs (NFPTs). However, this depends on the PT type. Headaches and visual disturbances are the most frequent mass-effect symptoms, bu...

CONCLUSION: Hydromer-coated shunt systems and antibiotic-impregnated shunt system represent a superior alternative to standard shunt systems for the reduction of shunt infection in the early post operative period. PMID: 31935310 [PubMed - in process]

ConclusionThe accurate diagnosis of isolated BPC is not always straightforward, which is especially critical in the context of fetomaternal medicine. A  detailed description of posterior fossa malformations is to be preferred over unspecific terminology.

Hydrocephalus is rare in sarcoidosis, especially as the presenting symptom. Neurosarcoidosis as a cause of unexplained communicating hydrocephalus should be considered in cases of abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and negative infectious and tumoral studies. ABSTRACT Objective: To present a program of home physical exercises for patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and to evaluate adherence, acceptance and applicability; to verify possible changes in patients with NPH in the home physical exercise program, comparing patients with, and without, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, regarding gait, quality of life, activities of daily living, static and dynamic balance and its impact on the risks of falling. Methods: This was a controlled clinical trial, with assessments in three moments (0, 10 and 18 weeks) at the home, from October 2015 to November 2017. Fifty-two patient...

On the other hand, suprasellar craniopharyngioma without ventriculomegaly is generally surgically managed by craniotomy or the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA). Here, we report an e...

m J Abstract OBJECTIVE: Subdural hematomas and hygromas (SDHs) are common complications in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) patients with shunts. In this registry-based study, patients with shunted iNPH were screened nationwide to identify perioperative variables that may increase the risk of SDH. METHODS: The Swedish Hydrocephalus Quality Registry was reviewed for iNPH patients who had undergone shunt surgery in Sweden in 2004-2014. Potential risk factors for SDH were recorded preoperatively and 3 months after surgery. Drug prescriptions were identified from a national pharmacy database. Patie...

CONCLUSIONS: High-resolution 3D MR imaging using isotropic CISS sequences allows systematic evaluation of catheter positioning, patency, and potential etiologic differentiation of filling defects when shunt dysfunction is suspected.
