CONCLUSIONS: Formulations containing antioxidant vitamins, R-alpha lipoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, administered for 6 consecutive months, counteracted the oxidative stress by further stabilising the morphological/functional parameters of both the ocular surface and the glaucoma, without presenting with adverse effects or intolerances. This article reviews the state of the art and major unanswered questions related to ocular vascular anatomy and physiology, ocular imaging techniques, clinical findings in glaucoma and other eye diseases, and mechanistic modeling predictions, while laying a path for integrating clinical observations with mathematical models and artificial intelligence. Viable alternatives for integrated data analysis are proposed that aim to overcome the limitations of standard statistical approaches and enable individually tailored precision medicine in ophthalmology.

Authors: Lanza M, Benincasa G, Costa D, Napoli C Abstract Network medicine is a molecular-bioinformatic approach analyzing gene-gene interactions that can perturb the human interactome. This review focuses on epigenetic changes involved in several ocular diseases, such as DNA methylation, histone and nonhistone post-translational modifications, and noncoding RNA regulators. Although changes in aberrant DNA methylation play a major role in the pathogenesis of most ocular diseases, histone modifications are seldom investigated. Hypermethylation in TGM-2 and hypomethylation in MMP-2/CD24 promoter genes may play a cruc...

Authors: Reinehr S, Grotegut P, Tsai T, Wagner N, Joachim SC Abstract In view of the aging members of our society, there will be an increase in severe visual impairment and blindness, also due to glaucoma, in the coming years. Therapy options are limited to treat occurring symptoms. Currently, only a deceleration of the pathogenesis progression, but no cure, is available. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new therapeutic strategies to treat glaucoma adequately and effectively, thus improving the quality of life of those affected. One possible approach seems to be primary neuroprotection, which acts independentl...

CONCLUSION: PLOA can lead to visual and organ threatening complications. Accurate diagnosis is required for further diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and to counteract potential local and systemic complications. Interindividual differences in the course have to be considered. PMID: 31968364 [PubMed - in process]

ConclusionSlit-lamp re-bubbling is a practical and safe alternative to taking patients back to the operating room. Using a new paracentesis for valve action control over air injection with a blunt cannula adds better control and may help to reduce complications.

Publication date: Available online 23 January 2020Source: Progress in Retinal and Eye ResearchAuthor(s): Eun Jung Lee, Jong Chul Han, Do Young Park, Changwon KeeAbstractNeuroretinal rim thinning (NRR) is a characteristic glaucomatous optic disc change. However, the precise mechanism of the rim thinning has not been completely elucidated. This review focuses on the structural role of the glioarchitecture in the formation of the glaucomatous NRR thinning. The NRR is a glia-framed structure, with honeycomb geometry and mechanically reinforced astrocyte processes along the transverse plane. When neural damage selectively invol...

AbstractIntroductionTo describe the changes in endothelial cell density (ECD), the coefficient of variation (CV), the percentage of hexagonal cells (%HEX), and central corneal thickness (CCT) following 3  months of therapy with netarsudil 0.02%/latanoprost 0.005% fixed combination, and to compare these changes with those seen with netarsudil 0.02% or latanoprost 0.005% in eyes with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.MethodsA subset of subjects enrolled in a Phase 3 evaluation of the intraocular pressure-lowering efficacy and safety of netarsudil 0.02%/latanoprost 0.005% fixed combination once daily (QD) versus...
