High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) combined with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs (GnRHa) and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) for adenomyosis: a case series with long-term follow up.

Conclusions: HIFU ablation, in combination with GnRHa and LNG-LUS, might be a safe and effective alternative in the treatment for women with adenomyosis. PMID: 31793356 [PubMed - in process]

Injury to skin triggers natural wound healing responses that may lead to scar formation, or excessive deposition of the extracellular matrix, mostly containing collagen [1]. With technological advances, many minimally or non-invasive means of treating scars have been used and are fairly effective, although results may be modest in keloids or hypertrophic scars [2]. Topical or injectable agents (i.e. steroids, interferon, 5-fluorouracil, plasma), passive microneedling, radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, fractional and non-ablative laser technology, radiation, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), and cryotherapy have al...

awa M Abstract Interventional therapies are emerging modalities for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. Their aim is to reduce the morbidity associated with radical therapies (rT) by minimizing damage to non-cancerous tissue, with priority given to sparing key structures such as the neurovascular bundles, external sphincter, bladder neck, and rectum, while maintaining local cancer control. Interventional ablative technologies deliver energy in different ways to destroy cancer cells. The most widely investigated techniques are brachytherapy, external beam radiotherapy, cryotherapy, and high-intensity focuse...

(Pohang University of Science&Technology (POSTECH)) The research team led by Professor Chulhong Kim of POSTECH(Pohang University of Science and Technology) developed a photoacoustic thermometry system combined with a clinical ultrasound imaging platform to effectively guide the high intensity focused ultrasound treatment. Their research is published in IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and selected as a feature article and the front cover of the issue.

CONCLUSION: With local ablative techniques an improvement in the quality of life and possibly the prognosis can be achieved in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer; however, the latter aspect has to be viewed with caution due to a current lack of well-founded data. Mistletoe lectin-1 (ML1) is a nature-derived macromolecular cytotoxin that potently induces apoptosis in target cells. Non-specific cytotoxicity to normal cells is one of the major risks in its clinical application, and we therefore propose to encapsulate ML1 in a nanocarrier that can specifically release its cargo intratumorally, thus improving the efficacy to toxicity ratio of the cytotoxin. We investigated the encapsulation of ML1 in ultrasound-sensitive liposomes (USL) and studied its release by high-intensity focused ultrasound (HAccessedIFU). USL were prepared by entrapment of perfluorocarbon nanodroplets in pegylate...
