Susceptibility to diarrhea is related to hemodynamic markers of sympathetic activation in the general population.
Conclusion: Functional diarrhea was associated with hemodynamic indices of sympathetic activation, supporting a possible role of the autonomic nervous system in diarrhea. PMID: 31791149 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

I was recently hired as a consultant to review claims for services provided by about 2 dozen DPMs. The fraud and the abuse are staggering. Most of those involved are young associates in private practices. The practice owners impressed these associates with how much money they can make if they bill as instructed. I have reviewed cases for an initial visit with unilateral heel pain. The patient ended up with BILATERAL xrays, ultrasound and fluoroscopy all for “comparison”. Patients... Fraud
Today, The Department of Justice issued an announcement that was “the first ever criminal action against an EHR vendor.” Criminal action The core of the criminal action was something inevitable: the tension between better health and better profit. Here’s what I saw … all of which caused me to be not-so-surprised today when the news broke. In 2008 I was the CMIO at Allscripts. Much of my work was focused on how our customers could use our products to improve the health of our patients. We implemented clinical practice guidelines in the software as a way to help clinical teams...

Effect of moxibustion on the expression of GDNF and its receptor GFRα3 in the colon and spinal cord of rats with irritable bowel syndrome. Acupunct Med. 2019 Jun 12;:acupmed2017011455 Authors: Qi Q, Wu H, Jin X, Jin D, Wang Y, Wang C, Liu Y, Wang X Abstract BACKGROUND: Moxibustion treatment has been found to ameliorate clinical symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Herein we investigated the mechanisms underlying the use of moxibustion in a rat model of IBS. METHODS: In our study, an IBS model was established in rats b...
Abstract Treatments for functional constipation (FC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS‐C) differ, but symptom criteria do not reliably distinguish between them; some regard FC and IBS‐C as parts of a single constipation spectrum. Our goal was to review studies comparing FC and IBS‐C to identify possible biomarkers that separate them. A systematic review identified 15 studies that compared physiologic tests in FC vs IBS‐C. Pain thresholds were lower in IBS‐C than FC for 3/5 studies and not different in 2/5. Colonic motility was decreased more in FC than IBS‐C for 3/3 studies, and whole gut tran...
