IJERPH, Vol. 16, Pages 4890: Atrial Fibrillation in Athletes—Features of Development, Current Approaches to the Treatment, and Prevention of Complications International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health doi: 10.3390/ijerph16244890 Authors: Achkasov Bondarev Smirnov Waśkiewicz Rosemann Nikolaidis Knechtle Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common types of cardiac arrhythmias. This review article highlights the problem of the development of atrial fibrillation in individuals engaged in physical activity and sports. Predisposing factors, causes, and development mechanisms of atrial fibrillation in athletes from the perspective of the authors are described. Methods of treatment, as well as prevention of thromboembolic complications, are discussed. Directions for further studies of this problem and prevention of complications are proposed.

Atrial fibrillation and hypertension represent 2 of the most important national public health priorities. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia among adults, affecting up to 2% of the US population. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation is expected to increase 3-fold in the next 3 decades. Robust data have identified hypertension as an independent modifiable risk factor for atrial fibrillation and as the most common cardiovascular condition associated with it. Hypertension is present in up to 80% of individuals with atrial fibrillation. Fulfilling a fundamental principle of evidence-based medi...

This study is divided into two stages: (a) a systematic review carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Diagnostic Test Accuracy Studies (PRISMA-DTA) statement in six databases, in order to identify the features of the PPG signal reported in the literature for the detection of AF, and (b) an experimental evaluation of them, using machine learning, in order to determine which have the greatest influence on the process of detecting AF. Forty-four features were found when analyzing the signal in the time, frequency, or time–frequency domains. From those 44 feat...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia and is associated with substantial morbidity and impairment of quality of life. Restoration and maintenance of normal sinus rhythm is a desirable goal for many patients with AF, however, this strategy is limited by the relatively small number of antiarrhythmic drugs (AADs) available for AF rhythm control. Although it is recommended in current medical guidelines as first-line therapy for patients without structural heart disease, the use of flecainide has been curtailed since the completion of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial (CAST).

This study aimed to compare the risk of fractures, acute myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, and ventricular arrhythmia among Danish citizens aged ≥ 65 which were new users of promethazine or domperidone, triazolam, loratadine, and betahistine. Secondly, the study aimed to perform a risk stratification to identify the most relevant predictors for the study outcomes. Methods: The study period was 01/01/2015 to 31/12/2016. The data sources were the Danish registers. Each patient was followed for 90 days. A logistic regression model was used to compute the unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (OR), and a conditional ...

Abstract Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in western society affecting more than 35 million individuals worldwide annually. It is a common postoperative complication and may also occur spontaneously during general and local anesthesia administration. Aging, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases including cardiomyopathies, congenital cardiac anomalies, heart failure, myocardial ischemia, pericarditis, previous cardiac surgery, vascular disease, and valvular heart disease are some correlated factors. Beyond age, increased incidence of atrial fibrillation has been corre...

In conclusion, AGE–RAGE axis is involved in the development of AF through atrial structural and electrical remodeling. The treatment modalities for AF should include lowering of AGE, suppression of RAGE, elevation of sRAGE, and use of antioxidants.
