CONCLUSION: OUD-hospitalizations increased in all 5 musculoskeletal diseases studied, but the rate of increase differed. Awareness of these OUD-hospitalization trends in 5 musculoskeletal diseases among providers, policy-makers and patients is important. Development and implementation of interventions, policies and practices to potentially reduce OUD-associated impact in people with rheumatic diseases is needed. AbstractA 61 ‐year‐old male patient with a 13‐year history of untreated gout presented to our hospital with pain in the left knee. Physical examination revealed inflammatory changes in the left knee, large subcutaneous nodules in bilateral first metatarsophalangeal joints, and enlargement of the left Achil les tendon. Despite treatment for gout with allopurinol elsewhere during the last five years, the large subcutaneous nodules had progressed. His serum uric acid level was 5.9 mg/dL, and his C‐reactive protein level was elevated (5.82 mg/dL).

Pain is a fundamental feature of inflammation. The immune system plays a critical role in the activation of sensory neurons and there is increasing evidence of neuro-inflammatory mechanisms contributing to painful pathologies. The inflammasomes are signaling multiprotein complexes that are key components of the innate immune system. They are intimately involved in inflammatory responses and their activation leads to production of inflammatory cytokines that in turn can affect sensory neuron function. Accordingly, the contribution of inflammasome activation to pain signaling has attracted considerable attention in recent ye...

Abstract This review is devoted to rheumatologic diseases mainly characterized by different types of arthritis. They may involve also different organs, including the kidney, but renal disease is more frequently caused by the nephrotoxicity of drugs to relieve pain or to interfere with the pathophysiology of the underlying disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is the prototype of arthropathies. This autoimmune disease mainly attacks joints, tendons and ligaments but can also involve internal organs including the kidney. Psoriatic arthritis is a complex disease in which psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory disease, is associat...
