AbstractCaprine anaplasmosis is an economically important tick-borne rickettsial disease that affects goats all over the world. Microscopic examination of stained blood smears from 162 animals revealed inclusion bodies ofAnaplasma spp. in 24 cases. Genus specific PCR forAnaplasma spp. yielded positive results in 22 cases. All the diseased animals showed a significant fall in the mean values of antioxidants such as reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase and a significant increase in the level of lipid peroxidation. Out of the 22 animals positive for anaplasmosis both in blood smear and PCR, 16 female non pre...

This article addresses a new framework based on Attention U-Net (ATT U-Net) network and graph-based Random Walk (RW) to extract both nucleus and cytoplasm of each individual cell within an image of overlapping cervical cells. The proposed approach starts by separating nuclei from the cellular clumps through ATT U-Net architecture. Then, we remove fake nuclei that are usually much smaller than real nuclei. For each nucleus, a polar coordinate sampling matrix is generated. Each element in this matrix is realized by converting the image pixel from Cartesian coordinates to polar coordinates. After that, converted images would ...

Abstract Southern blotting of DNA terminal restriction fragment lengths is the gold standard for measuring mean telomere length. Analysis of the final image is a crucial step in this process, however, current techniques are cumbersome and prone to error. Here we present a simple and accurate method for analyzing telomere smears. Basic 2D gel imaging software was used to automatically subtract background, generate standard curves and calculate net intensity and MW at each position (i) along the telomere smear. Our method required no statistical software or major data manipulation and correctly classified>80% of ...

AbstractIndigenous women have higher rates of cervical cancer and cervical cancer mortality compared to non-Indigenous women, as well as unique challenges to accessing screening services. Human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling has been demonstrated as an effective measure to reach under-screened women. A scoping review identified 19 sources matching selection criteria through a systematic search of PubMed and Scopus completed in May 2018. Analysis revealed that this is a limited field of research; albeit one that has undergone growth in the last 7  years. HPV self-sampling is identified as easy, convenient, comforta...

ConclusionsIn elderly patients, inflammation level and physical activity level, along with initial smear grade may have a significant impact on delayed sputum conversion. Non ‐conversion after two months of treatment might not be related with mortality.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to assess the value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) for the diagnosis of severe respiratory diseases based on interpretation of sequencing results. BALF samples were harvested and used for mNGS as well as microbiological detection. Infectious bacteria or fungi were defined according to relative abundance and number of unique reads. We performed mNGS on 35 BALF samples from 32 patients. The positive rate reached 100% in the mNGS analysis of nine immunocompromised patients. Compared with the culture method, mNGS had a diagnostic sen...
