Benign Adrenocortical Tumors and the Detection of Nonadrenal Neoplasia.

Conclusions: Patients with benign adrenocortical tumors had higher odds of detected pancreatic IPMN, as well as thyroid nodules, parathyroid tumors, benign breast masses, and prostate hyperplasia compared with patients with normal adrenal glands. These associations may have important implications for patient care and healthcare economics, regardless of whether they reflect incidental discoveries due to imaging detection or frequency bias, or a common risk for developing multiple neoplasia. In conclusion, bony manifestations of hyperparathyroidism can be disabling and difficult to treat. Although a rare clinical presentation, the severity of bony manifestations arise from a preventable cause and that the initial evaluation of hyperparathyroidism should also include parathyroid scintigraphy, and not limited to screening of the neck with ultrasonography, for its combined additive information and improved diagnostic value.

Authors: Wu J, Li YT, Tian XT, Liu YS, Wu ML, Li PN, Liu J Abstract BACKGROUNDS: Anaplastic thyroid cancer/ATC is highly lethal malignancy without reliable chemotherapeutic drug. Resveratrol possesses anti-ATC activities but encounters resistance in some cases due to certain unknown reason(s). OBJECTIVE: Because signal transducer and activator of transcription/STAT3 signaling is critical for ATC cell survival and the main molecular target of resveratrol, its roles in determining the fates of resveratrol-treated ATC cells were investigated here. METHODS: Human THJ-11T, THJ-16 and THJ-21T ATC cell lines were ...

AbstractPurposeMost thyroid cancer are incidentally diagnosed. However, little is known on the different modalities of incidental diagnosis in adult versus older patients.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed data from 440 patients consecutively diagnosed with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) in a single institution. Modalities of diagnosis were categorized as follows: (A) clinically diagnosed, nonincidental cases; (B) incidental during carotid power-duplex (CPD); (C) incidental during neck imaging other than carotid power-duplex; (D) incidental during imaging workup of thyroid dysfunction or at histological examination af...

ng Bom Min Kwon We investigated whether the performance of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) for response prediction could be improved based on the iodine uptake pattern on the post-therapeutic I-131 whole body scan (RxWBS) and the degree of thyroid tissue damage with radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy. A total of 319 patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma who underwent total thyroidectomy and RAI therapy were included. Based on the presence/absence of focal uptake at the anterior midline of the neck above the thyroidectomy bed on RxWBS, patients were classified into positive and negative uptake groups. Serum Tg ...

Purpose: To investigate the value of US and elastography for predicting prognostic factors of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in the positive BRAFV600E Mutation group.Materials and Methods: A total of 116 BRAFV600E Mutation patients with PTCs were enrolled in this prospective study, who were preoperatively evaluated by US, US elasticity imaging (EI), and Virtual Touch tissue imaging (VTI) and Virtual Touch tissue quantification (VTQ) of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to assess 23 independent variables for predicting prognostic factors. Diagnostic perf...

ConclusionStage I PTC patients showed large amount of expressional heterogeneity. Therefore, risk stratification based on the expressional alterations of candidate biomarkers could be an important step toward personalized management of these patients.

According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric surgery, there were an estimated 158,000 bariatric surgeries performed in 2011. This number has steadily increased yearly, with 216,000 procedures performed in 2016 [1]. Bariatric surgery and its negative effects on bone health have been well documented in the literature. Particularly, its effects on calcium and vitamin-D pathways can lead to hyperparathyroidism as well as changes in metabolic and hormonal profiles, which can be detrimental to bone metabolism [2,3].
