The effectiveness of knee osteoarthritis treatment by arthroscopic microfracture technique in combination with autologous bone marrow stem cells transplantation.

CONCLUSION: Treatment of osteoarthritis by a combination of arthroscopic microfracture and transplantation of autologous bone-marrow stem cells was an invasive, safe and effective method which showed an improvement in the clinical symptoms (VAS score) and knee functions (KOOS points). AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe purpose of this review is to evaluate recent advancements in regenerative medicine modalities in the treatment of the most common spinal disorders.Recent FindingsImmunomodulatory and trophic effects of the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and growth factors have been studied in the treatment of symptomatic degenerative spine disorders including degenerative disc disease and facet joint arthropathy. Gene therapy and exosomes are investigated as a future generation of biologics with gene therapy most advanced in the treatment of osteoarthritis.SummaryWhile current studie...

a Cruz Diane Liu Eduardo Bruera Palliative care is seeing cancer patients earlier in the disease trajectory with a multitude of chronic issues. Chronic non-malignant pain (CNMP) in cancer patients is under-studied. In this prospective study, we examined the prevalence and management of CNMP in cancer patients seen at our supportive care clinic for consultation. We systematically characterized each pain type with the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and documented current treatments. The attending physician made the pain diagnoses according to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) task force classific...

Females and males show clear differences in their susceptibility to many diseases, notably autoimmune diseases and malignancies, but also certain infectious diseases [1]. In addition to sex differences in disease susceptibility, there is abundant epidemiological and experimental evidence that sex is a major determinant of pain. Women are markedly overrepresented in chronic pain states, including several painful musculoskeletal conditions such as low back pain, fibromyalgia, and myofascial pain [2-4].

Authors: Gudin J, Nalamachu S Abstract Interest in and use of topical analgesics has been increasing, presumably due to their potential utility for relief of acute and chronic pain. Topically applied agents with analgesic properties can target peripheral nociceptive pathways while minimizing absorption into the plasma that leads to potential systemic adverse effects.Clinical trials have found 5% lidocaine patches to be effective and well tolerated for the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) with a minimal risk of toxicity or drug-drug interactions. With this patch formulation, the penetration of lidocaine in...

Conclusion: Sham acupuncture may not be appropriate as a control intervention for assessing the effectiveness of acupuncture. Acupuncture effectiveness in controlling chronic pain is still limited due to the low quality of the studies published. PMID: 31885655 [PubMed]

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS) and knee osteoarthritis (KOA), both of which are age-related degenerative diseases, are independently correlated with increased pain and dysfunction of the lower extremities. However, there have been few studies that investigated whether LSS patients with KOA exhibit poor clinical recovery following lumbar spinal surgery. The aim of this study was to elucidate the surgical outcomes of lumbar spinal surgery for LSS patients with KOA using multiple health-related quality of life (HRQOL) parameters. METHODS: A total of 865 consecutive patients who underwent ...

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the high-affinity receptor tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) have important roles in neuronal survival and in spinal sensitization mechanisms associated with chronic pain. Recent clinical evidence also supports a peripheral role of BDNF in osteoarthritis (OA), with synovial expression of TrkB associated with higher OA pain. The aim of this study was to use clinical samples and animal models to explore the potential contribution of knee joint BDNF/TrkB signalling to chronic OA pain. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and TrkB mRNA and protein were present in knee synovia from O...
