ConclusionsComputational measures reflecting individual PVS size, length and width were more strongly associated with WMH, stroke and hypertension than computational count or visual PVS score. Multidimensional computational PVS metrics may increase sensitivity to detect associations of PVS with risk exposures, brain lesions and neurological disease, provide greater anatomic detail and accelerate sunderstanding of disorders of brain fluid and waste clearance.Graphical abstract

ConclusionElderly patients who had hip fracture surgery and developed wound infections had an increased LOS. However social issues also contributed to the increase length of stay that could be addressed by proper planning and involvement of families and care givers. The factors identified could be used as a starting point for planning services aimed at decreasing the hospital stay of elderly patients.

ConclusionsThe data regarding ketamine use in mechanically ventilated patients is limited in terms of quantity, methodological quality, and demonstrated clinical benefit. Ketamine may play a role as a sedative-sparing agent, but may be associated with harm. High-quality studies are needed before widespread adoption of ketamine earlier in the sedation pathway.

ConclusionThis study indicates that the antihypertensive activity of P. niruri extract is mediated by vasoactive phytoconstituents that dilate the arterial wall via endothelium-dependent pathways and β-adrenoceptor activity which, in turn, cause vasorelaxation and reduce blood pressure.Graphical abstract

This study analyzed whether calpain-1 causes cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction by modulating the expression and activity of MMP-2 in renovascular hypertension.Main methodsMale Wistar rats were submitted to two kidneys, one clip (2K1C) model of hypertension or sham surgery and were treated with verapamil (VRP, 8 mg/kg/bid) by gavage from the second to tenth week post-surgery. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was weekly assessed by tail-cuff plethysmography and morphological and functional parameters of LV were analyzed by echocardiography. MMP-2 activity was analyzed by in situ and gelatin zymography, while calpain-1 activ...

ConclusionsThe most common haemodynamic profile observed in adults with SD consisted of hypochronotropism and hypervolaemia, with normal values for peripheral vascular resistance and optimal mean BP values. There were no participants with hypertension in our sample.
