Pharmacotherapy problems in cardiology patients 30 days post discharge from a tertiary hospital in Brazil: a randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVES: This is a randomized controlled trial that aims to evaluate the impact of pharmacist-led discharge counseling on reducing pharmacotherapy problems in the 30-day postdischarge period of cardiology patients from a tertiary hospital in Brazil. METHODS: At discharge, two cardiovascular pharmacy residents performed a medication counseling session with the intervention group, and the follow-up was performed by telephone (3 and 15 days after discharge). The number of pharmacotherapy problems was evaluated during a pharmacist-led ambulatory consultation 30 days after discharge. RESULTS: A total of 66 and 67 patients were randomized to the intervention and control groups, respectively, but only 51 patients were analyzed in each group, all with similar baseline characteristics. The intervention group had significantly fewer pharmacotherapy problems compared to the control (p

Authors: Wan J, Feng Y, Du L, Veeraraghavan VP, Mohan SK, Guo S Abstract Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease that develops and progresses in the arterial wall in response to a variety of stimuli. Among various other stimuli, hyperlipidemia is an extremely important factor that is correlated with the development of atherosclerosis. Lemon and citrus fruits contain various bioactive flavonoids, such as eriocitrin, that prevent obesity and related metabolic diseases. Therefore we concentrated on eriocitrin, a potent flavonoid with numerous therapeutic properties, particularly its beneficial lipid-lowering actio...

Germinal center (GC) responses require B cells to respond to a dynamic set of intercellular and microenvironmental signals that instruct B cell positioning, differentiation, and metabolic reprogramming. RHO-associated coiled-coil–containing protein kinase 2 (ROCK2), a serine-threonine kinase that can be therapeutically targeted by ROCK inhibitors or statins, is a key downstream effector of RHOA GTPases. Although RHOA-mediated pathways are emerging as critical regulators of GC responses, the role of ROCK2 in B cells is unknown. Here, we found that ROCK2 was activated in response to key T cell signals like CD40 and IL-...

We report a case of ANCA-associated vasculitis coexisting with cholesterol emboli. A 76-year-old woman was diagnosed with ANCA-associated interstitial pneumonitis. She rapidly developed progressive glomerulonephritis, purpura, and peripheral sensory nerve disorder. A kidney biopsy revealed that renal dysfunction was caused by vasculitis of the interlobular arteries and cholesterol emboli. A skin biopsy revealed that purpura was caused by cholesterol emboli. Glucocorticoid and statin therapies were administered. Thereafter, the renal function and other symptoms improved and stabilized. The representative symptoms of ANCA-as...

Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a uniformly fatal condition that is especially prevalent in skin, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems. A wide gap exists between our knowledge of the disease and a promising treatment or cure. The aim of this study was to first characterize the musculoskeletal phenotype of the homozygous...

While a unified mechanism of action has yet to emerge from numerous proposed molecular targets of CBD, preclinical studies reveal a pleiotropic pharmacology. Here, we report the application of temporally-resolved multi-omic profiling and biosensor screening to dissect the molecular mechanism of CBD in human neuroblastoma cells. CDB treatment led to a rise in cyt...

AbstractEffects of statins over clinical changes in Alzheimer ’s disease (AD) are usually non-significant, but epistatic interactions between genetic variants involved in cholesterol metabolism could be important for such effects. We aimed to investigate whetherLDLR single-nucleotide polymorphisms rs11669576 (LDLR8), rs5930 (LDLR10), and rs5925 (LDLR13) are associated with cognitive and functional changes in AD, while also consideringAPOE haplotypes and lipid-lowering treatment with lipophilic statins for stratification. Consecutive outpatients with late-onset AD were screened with cognitive tests, while caregivers s...
