Incidence and outcomes of Mycobacterium abscesssus infections in non-Cystic Fibrosis patients

In conclusion, the incidence of M abscessus does not seem to be increasing in non-CF patients in our institution. There may be an epidemiological link with acid suppression and reflux disease, this hypothesis has been previously reported in patients with CF.

This study determined the bio-control efficacy of Pichia anomala alone and supplemented with 1% chitosan in the grapes against blue mold disease. The result showed that chitosan (1%) better induced the bio-control efficacy of P. anomala. P. anomala supplemented with 1% w/v chitosan significantly reduced the disease incidence, lesion diameter and natural decay of grapes without affecting the fruit quality compared to the control. In addition it enhanced the activities of disease defence related enzymes like ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and chitinase (CHI); and decreased the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen pero...

We report a case of a fatal Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome (SHS) in a migrant from Kenya, who had been living in Germany for three decades. A short-course oral steroid treatment for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD) exacerbation had been administered four weeks prior to the presentation. The initial clinical and radiological findings suggested a mechanical small bowel obstruction as a cause of ileus. Our case highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for strongyloidiasis in patients from endemic areas even years after they left the country of origin. It demonstrates that ev...

Here, we investigate the morphology of the first-instar larva of the two-tailed hanging-fly Bicaubittacus longiprocessus (Huang and Hua, 2005) using light and scanning electron microscopy. The larva is eruciform and possesses three pairs of thoracic legs and eight pairs of abdominal prolegs. The head bears a median ocellus on the frons and a pair of compound eyes with sev...

The as-deposited films were amorphous. Therefore, they were annealed at 1,000 °C in ambient air. After annealing, the crystal structure, local structure, coating...

This study aims to investigate the gamma and neutron attenuation properties of several OAD (oral anti-diabetic drugs) samples. Our sample consists of seven different OAD films with different elemental compositions. The data were evaluated with Monte Carlo (MATLAB, WinX) techniques by SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and EDS (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy) analysis. By using WinXCOM in the energy range from 0.02 MeV to 20 MeV, the mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) for OAD samples are calculated. Additionally, both effective removal cross-section and effective atomic numbers (Zeff) for the sample films ...

Authors: Kikutani K, Itai J, Ota K, Chosa K, Yamane Y, Shime N Abstract Bronchial artery aneurysms are a rare but potentially life-threatening complications because of the massive hemothorax or hemoptysis that occurs with ruptures. A 79-year-old woman was transferred to our hospital because of the sudden onset of back pain, syncope, and subsequent hypotension. Computed tomography showed a left bronchial artery aneurysm with bilateral hemothorax and hemomediastinum. Transcatheter bronchial artery embolization failed because of the anatomical location, and she went into cardiopulmonary arrest. Cardiopulmonary resusci...

This is due to the presence of both surface pores and interconnected channels that provide a greater contact area for the absorption of active agents. However, the use of MS for carrying hydrophobic drugs is limited because the prep...

We present two isomeric series of photosensitive bent-core liquid crystals possessing a lateral chlorine atom in the central resorcinol unit and various linking units in the side arms. With the aim to tune properties of the nematic phase, we have varied the type of the linking unit in the lengthening arm with rising rigidity from benzoate ester, biphenyl, cinnamate, Schiff base to stilbene moieties. In addition to that, we have changed the position of the lateral substituent (chlorine) as well. The mesomorphic properties of the materials have been determined from differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical micros...
