Australian perceptions of pertussis and vaccine preventable disease in the setting of asthma and COPD

Conclusions: Despite the availability and broad use of pertussis containing vaccines in the setting of pregnancy and infants, use of these vaccines in Australian adults remains limited. These findings highlight a significant opportunity to improve awareness and uptake of pertussis containing vaccines in individuals with chronic respiratory disease.

Authors: He M, Zheng Y, Ma A, Zhang C, Yu Y, Wang H, Chen Y, Xiang M, Tao K, Shen J Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the potential association between Helicobacter pylori (a H. pylori) positive state and chronic cough. A clinical observational study with systematic analysis was performed, including 278 patients with complaints of chronic cough and 148 healthy controls. a H. pylori positive state was present in 61.2% of the patients in the chronic cough group and 68.9% in the chronic refractory cough group, as opposed to 43.9% in the control group. There was a significant improvement in 65.5% of the p...

Non-cytotoxic doses of shikonin inhibit lipopolysaccharide-induced TNF-α expression via activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. Exp Ther Med. 2020 Nov;20(5):45 Authors: Zhang F, Pan T, Wu X, Gao X, Li Z, Ren X Abstract Shikonin has been reported to exhibit a wide variety of medical functions. However, the strong non-selective cytotoxicity of shikonin can restrict its clinical application. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of shikonin at non-cytotoxic doses on the pro-inflammation functions of monocytes and macrophages. The present results sugges...

Authors: Riskin A, Itzchaki O, Bader D, Iofe A, Toropine A, Riskin-Mashiah S Abstract BACKGROUND: The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing in parallel to the worldwide obesity and type 2 diabetes pandemic. Both GDM and pre-gestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) are associated with short- and long-term consequences in the offspring. There are few recent studies addressing outcomes of newborns born to women diagnosed with GDM and PGDM in Israel. OBJECTIVES: To assess perinatal complications in offspring of women with GDM and PGDM. METHODS: The authors conducted a single-center retrospe...

CONCLUSIONS: The medical facility experienced a major decline in all aspects of the routine obstetrics activities during the time of the pandemic. The higher rate of operative vaginal deliveries among nulliparous may be associated with the pandemic effect on the rate of high-risk patients. PMID: 32954690 [PubMed - in process]

We report a 34-year-old woman with a medical history of asthma and Raynaud's phenomenon, presented for the evaluation and management of multiple erythematous hyperpigmented annular plaques reportedly developed after taking trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. An initial skin biopsy showed findings supportive of a drug eruption. She was treated with oral prednisone and achieved some improvement. She presented 1 year later with enlargement of the plaques and emergence of new lesions. Skin biopsies revealed an unremarkable epidermis with marked fibrosis of the mid-to-deep dermis with sparing of the papillary dermis, and superficial...

Purpose: To present the distribution of time to retinal redetachment in eyes undergoing retinal detachment surgery, using a method for adjusting time to outcome in eyes with silicone oil or heavy liquid tamponade (“oil-filled eyes”). Methods: Data from two Australian centers were used. Adjusted time to outcome was measured from the date of tamponade removal in oil-filled eyes, unless failure was diagnosed with tamponade in situ. Results: 188/1257 failures were identified (15.0%). Using unadjusted time to outcome, failures in oil-filled eyes occurred later than non–oil-filled eyes (median time to f...

Authors: Qu C, Gao K, Li W Abstract We have read the article entitled "A rare association: acute pancreatitis caused by the influenza virus A with secondary appendicitis in a six-year-old girl" by Láinez Ramos-Bossini AJ et al. with great interest. This case report is successful and informative. We are specifically interested in viruses and pediatric pancreatitis and would like to mention a few crucial points about pediatric pancreatitis caused by a viral infection.
