Rhinosinusitis nasal symptoms among cystic fibrosis adults: a retrospective one year analysis

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and nasal polyposis are common comorbidities among Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients. These conditions are managed with education to routine nasal irrigations, periodical follow-ups that consists of quality of life questionnaires, annual nasal fibroscopy and nasal lavage fluid analysis.Aim: To retrospectively analyze CF patients with symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis. An observational retrospective analysis was performed from 2017 to 2018 among clinically stable adult CF patients. Respiratory function indices, anthropometric data, routine airway clearance techniques and Sino-nasal Outcome Score Test (SNOT-20) were collected. Patients that underwent Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery within five years were excluded. Lungs transplanted patients were also excluded. The study was conducted at Tuscany Regional Cystic Fibrosis Centre.Thirty patients (17 female) aged 33,7(11) years with a FEV1%pred of 49(24) and a FVC%pred of 66(19,8) completed a SNOT-20. Mean SNOT score was 27(16). Cough was considered the most severe symptom followed by thick nasal discharge, fatigue and need to blow nose. Items frequency and SNOT-20 total score were not significantly different according to severity of pulmonary impairment, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa colonization, BMI and type of routine airway clearance technique. CF patients tended to misconstrue SNOT-20 items that were already experienced because of their pulmonary disease. Patients reported social/emot...
