Sex differences in symptoms and comorbidities among adults in a sleep apnea cohort
This study was conducted among consecutive adults, who were admitted to the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Marmara University, Istanbul between November 2015 and October 2018. Participants answered the questionnaires and underwent a sleep study with cardiorespiratory polygraphy. OSA was defined as an Apnoe-Hypopnoe-Index (AHI)≥15/h.In all, 1042 adults (334 women; 32.1%) were included. OSA was diagnosed in 589 (56.5%). In the OSA group, women were older (53.7±11.5 vs 47.8± 12.8 yrs; p

FOXP3 (Forkhead box protein P3), a member of the forkhead–winged-helix family, is the pivotal transcriptional factor of Treg. The expression, post-translational modifications and protein complex of FOXP3 present a great impact on the functional stability and immune plasticity of Treg in vivo. In part...

Burdette, Lauren HaleAbstractAlthough there is no empirical evidence linking gun ownership with better sleep, speculation is widespread in gun culture. We assess the direct association between gun ownership and sleep disturbance and whether gun ownership moderates the association between neighborhood fear and sleep disturbance. We use four waves of cross-sectional data from the General Social Survey (2010–2018) and logistic regression to model sleep disturbance as a function of gun own...
ConclusionsThis is the largest series to date reporting>30-day follow-up for patients undergoing venous ablation procedures while receiving anticoagulation and the longest follow-up reported of any series. Durability, safety, and efficacy of vein ablation in patients receiving anticoagulation are comparable to those in control patients. Anticoagulation should not be considered a contraindication to endothermal ablation of the GSV or SSV for symptomatic venous reflux.

LarsonAbstractPerformance-monitoring event-related brain potentials (ERPs), such as the error-related negativity (ERN) and reward positivity (RewP), are advocated as biomarkers of depression symptoms and risk. However, a recent meta-analysis indicated effect size heterogeneity in the ERN and RewP literatures. Hence, advocating these ERPs as biomarkers of depression might be premature or possibly misguided due to the selective reporting of significant analyses on the p...
Abstract Life review (LR) therapy has received considerable support as an effective treatment for depression among older adults. Researchers believe that providing LR does not require extensive training and can be done by family members who are not psychiatric professionals. If so, then training family caregivers to provide LR is a potential strategy for alleviating the shortage of resources for treating depression among the growing population of older adults experiencing depression. A pilot study that explored the feasibility of that strategy had mixed results. Seventeen (89%) of 19 caregiver-care recipient dyads...
This article reviews the state of the art and major unanswered questions related to ocular vascular anatomy and physiology, ocular imaging techniques, clinical findings in glaucoma and other eye diseases, and mechanistic modeling predictions, while laying a path for integrating clinical observations with mathematical models and artificial intelligence. Viable alternatives for integrated data analysis are proposed that aim to overcome the limitations of standard statistical approaches and enable individually tailored precision medicine in ophthalmology.
