EBUS TBNA in the rapid microbiological diagnosis of drug resistant tuberculous mediastinal lymphadenopathy

Conclusion: Xpert MTB/RIF assay carried out on the EBUS-TBNA specimens provide a rapid diagnosis in most patients with TB. However, all EBUS-TBNA specimens should be sent for both Xpert MTB/RIF testing as well as culture-based DST, which not only detects resistance to drugs other than rifampicin, but also detects rifampicin resistance that may be missed by Xpert MTB/RIF testing.
