Incidence and Predictors of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Trichomonas Among a Prospective Cohort of Cisgender Female Sex Workers in Baltimore, Maryland

Conclusions In this study of urban US street-based CFSW, interpersonal and structural factors differentially predicted STIs, and infection rates remained elevated through follow-up despite regular testing, notification, and treatment referral. Focused and multifaceted interventions for sex workers and their sexual partners are urgently needed.

ConclusionsA disproportionately high burden ofC.trachomatis is present among young asymptomatic women in Fiji of iTaukei ethnicity despite the low number of lifetime partners. Syndromic management and lack of barrier contraceptives contribute to hyperendemic levels. Strategic STI education and screening of at-risk adolescents, young women, and their partner(s) with appropriate treatment are urgently needed to control the epidemic.

Conclusions This survey collected important information on PHL STD laboratory testing practices. Capacity for important reference laboratory testing, such as GC culture and antimicrobial susceptibility, are needed to support STD programs. Public health laboratories play a key role in STD screening, surveillance, and prevention by offering test methods that are not available at commercial laboratories. Funding constraints affect the resources available for STD screening and surveillance, and thus, it is important to continue to monitor testing practices and the capacity of PHLs to test for STDs.

Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) is a protozoan flagellate which usually dwells in the urogenital tract of humans. It is considered as a major cause of sexually transmitted disease (STD) (Satterwhite et al. 2013). TV is more prevalent than Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and syphilis altogether (World Health Organization, 2011). However, it is excluded from public health STD awareness programs and is considered a neglected parasitic infection (www.cdc.gov/parasites/npi). It is not a reportable infection and approximately 250 million new cases occur every year (World Health Organization, 2011).
