Higher risk of Vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency for rural than urban dwellers

This study aimed to compare the Vitamin D status and serum 25(OH)D concentrations of adults living in an urban area to adults living in a rural area in the West of Ireland (latitude 53.27 °North). A cross-sectional retrospective analysis of clinical records was performed. Following interrogation of the electronic laboratory information system, individuals who had Vitamin D samples analysed at Galway University Hospitals between January 2011 and December 2015 were identified. ConclusionsOur results demonstrate that vitamin D deficiency induces insulin resistance. Its supplementation has significant beneficial effects on pathophysiological mechanisms in T2D but only in lean and not in the obese phenotype. The increased subacute inflammation and insulin resistance in obesity could not be significantly alleviated by vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D) is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure (HF) [1]. Vitamin D might play a role in the pathogenesis of HF [1 –4], with mechanisms for this possibly including effects on the renin–angiotensin system, insulin secretion and sensitivity, protection against angiogenesis and reduction of the pro-inflammatory response in HF [5–7].
