The relationship between excess adiposity and skin cancer risk is not fully understood. Studies demonstrate an inverse correlation between non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and excess body weight, as assessed by body mass index (BMI). However, the Swedish Obese Subjects study demonstrated that bariatric surgery was associated with a reduced risk of both melanoma and NMSC. Based upon these opposing findings, further studies are warranted to understand how excess adiposity influences skin carcinogenesis.

In conclusion, we have demonstrated a shift in the lipid metabolism in these OSCC samples by characterizing the detailed landscape. Predominantly, cholesterol and GPL metabolism were altered, suggesting that interactions with sterol regulatory binding proteins may be involved.
