Refractory Thrombocytopenia is a Valid Early Diagnostic Criteria for Hepatic Veno-Occlusive Disease in Children

Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a potentially fatal complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) seen in approximately 7 –27% of the children [1]. As specific pediatric criteria have been lacking so far, the modified Seattle criteria or the Baltimore criteria have been used for the diagnosis of VOD in children, too [2,3]. According to the Baltimore criteria, VOD can be diagnosed if a patient has hyperbilirubinemia o f>2 mg/dl and any two of the following: weight gain of>5% from baseline, hepatomegaly, or ascites.
