Prospective Analysis of Alternative Services and Cost Savings of Avoidable Admissions from the Emergency Department

Each year, nearly $1.1 trillion – or a third of national health care expenditures – is spent on hospital care.[1] Wide variation in admission practices across individual providers and hospitals exists[2] and is often cited by payers and policymakers as evidence that many hospital admissions are unnecessary. More than 80% of un scheduled hospital admission decisions are made in the emergency department (ED),[3] yet, to date, there is paucity of research examining potentially avoidable admissions from the ED.
