ConclusionsDifferent patterns of sleep disturbances are observed in HD patients: insomnia, difficulties in falling asleep, frequent nocturnal awakenings, and excessive daytime sleepiness are the most common sleep problems reported by patients with HD. In several HD studies, specific changes in sleep architecture and in circadian melatonin secretion were identified in laboratory testing.Sleep disorders in HD have diverse and complex determinants, the most significant of which includes damage to brain areas that are responsible for the proper sleep pattern and circadian rhythm regulation. Sleep and circadian rhythm disorders...

Discussion “[Cannabis] is a genus of flowering plant with three main varieties: sativa, indica and ruderalis.” It has been used for hundreds of years for hemp or fiber and also for psychoactive and medicinal effects. The active compounds are collectively called cannabinoids, of which delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the most abundant. The floral buds or calyxes of the plant have the most cannabinoids, but other parts of the plant are also used such as leaves. Hash oil, hashish (or resin) and marijuana (dried leaves) are the common products from strongest to least strongest products. ...

Something’s just not right: lately you are forgetful, stressed, and tired all of the time. Symptoms can vary from mood swings, to lack of concentration, to feeling chronically tired, and anxious. To top it off, no matter how healthy you try to eat, you still aren’t losing weight. So let’s add frustrated to the list. ConclusionPeripheral neuropathies secondary to toxins are increasingly considered but can be difficult to definitively diagnose especially when it presents with a subacute severe form mimicking Guillain-Barré syndrome. Yet, detecting the syndromic presentation and a history of toxin exposure can facilitate prompt and accurate diagnosis.

I don’t mean that you will be struck down by simply stepping into a Dunkin’ Donuts. I mean that donuts and others things wheat and grains will substantially abbreviate y0ur life, or at least make your time on earth a lot more miserable. I’ve been accused of exaggeration to get the no-wheat, no-grain message through. But if you see what I see every day, I think that you would agree: The consumption of wheat and grains is entirely inappropriate for humans; we exchange near-term calories for deterioration of long-term health that takes numerous forms. And when you see lives completely turned around by banish...

In January, 2018, Academic Press published my bookPrecision Medicine and the Reinvention of Human Disease. DISCUSSION: Pramipexole overdose with hallucination, agitation, and myoclonus is consistent with adverse effects reported with therapeutic toxicity, but mirtazapine and venlafaxine may have contributed. Pramipexole concentrations exceeded the therapeutic range for over 24 h. With the increasing use of pramipexole in restless legs syndrome, adult overdoses may become more common. Conclusions: Nail gun brain injuries are increasing reflecting widespread use of these tools particularly among young men. The tissue injury reflects parenchymal laceration without large kinetic energy transfer. These injuries are preventable and public health campaigns are underway to educate users about the safe use of nail guns. If injury with cranial penetration occurs, it is critical that the nail be removed under controlled conditions in the operating room.Disclosure: Dr. Goodman has nothing to disclose. Purpose of review: Endogenous synthesis of the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) is mediated by the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) gene cluster (11q12-13.1) and elongation of very long-chain fatty acids 2 (ELOVL2) (6p24.2) and ELOVL5 (6p12.1). Although older biochemical work identified the product of one gene, FADS2, rate limiting for LCPUFA synthesis, recent studies suggest that polymorphisms in any of these genes can limit accumulation of product LCPUFA. Recent findings: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) of Greenland Inuit shows strong adaptation signals within FADS gene cluster, attributed to high omega...
