Abstract Globally, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components which are the major cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, is higher among patients with severe mental illness (SMI) compared to the general population. This is mainly due to the deleterious lifestyles characterized by physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and unhealthy diets common among patients with SMI as well as due to cardiometabolic effects of psychotropic medications. Despite these conditions being highly prevalent among patients with SMI, little attention is given to these conditions during routine...
CONCLUSIONS In a rat model of maternal PCOS, exposure to androgens in utero resulted in dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota and metabolic disorders of the newborn female rats. PMID: 31815927 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSIONS: The presence of one or more prognostic factors as well as the various risk prediction models can guide selection of ACS patient subgroups for which a prophylactic CEA should or should not be offered. Decisions to offer prophylactic CEA should weigh in factors like surgeon's experience and hospital expertise/volume. Asymptomatic patients not expected to live long enough to benefit from the procedure should not be considered for CEA, but should be offered best medical treatment. ConclusionsComputational measures reflecting individual PVS size, length and width were more strongly associated with WMH, stroke and hypertension than computational count or visual PVS score. Multidimensional computational PVS metrics may increase sensitivity to detect associations of PVS with risk exposures, brain lesions and neurological disease, provide greater anatomic detail and accelerate sunderstanding of disorders of brain fluid and waste clearance.Graphical abstract
ConclusionsSeveral risk factors may play a role in evolution of MS. Our results show that smoking status, probably due to chronic vascular and neurotoxic effects of the cigarette components, can affect the brain damage from the early stages of MS. No association was observed with the other explored modifiable risk factors, although an effect due to the small sample size cannot be excluded.
Abstract The close connection and interaction between the cardiac and the liver functions are well-known, as cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is an important clinical entity which best describes the mutual pathogenical influence between these two organs. Due to the fact that cardiac dysfunction in patients with chronic hepatic disorders is oligosymptomatic or even asymptomatic, an early diagnosis represents a challenge for every physician. Syndecan-1-a transmembrane proteoglycan that exerts its functions mainly via its heparane sulfate chains-is a very promising biomarker, correlated not only with the degree of cardiac fi...
ConclusionMCS has an anti-diabetic effect, which may be related to its improving the lipid metabolism disorder, reducing oxidative stress level and regulating insulin signaling pathway.

Simpler systems were also stepwise investigated, to complete a previous preliminary study and to highlight a hierarchy of interactions that can be now s...
