Conclusions Selected clinical and radiological variables are associated with early death in malignant SVCS. These factors may identify a subgroup of patients who may benefit from treatment escalation.

ConclusionsThe single-port approach has advantages as easier surgical planning and transition for combined and multi-quadrants surgeries: faster recovery, minimal postoperative pain and need for opioids, and excellent cosmetic outcome. We suggest that combined procedures should be performed only in high volume institutions by surgeons with vast experience in robotic surgery in selected patients.ResumenIntroducciónPresentar el primer caso de cirugía multicuadrante concomitante —prostatectomía radical robótica y nefrectomía parcial robótica izquierda— realizadas con t&eac...

J reconstr Microsurg DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1701696 Background Sarcopenia has been implicated as a positive predictor of postsurgical complications. Its role in head and neck (H&N) free flap reconstruction has yet to be examined. Our study aimed to determine the clinical impact of sarcopenia on postoperative outcomes in patients receiving autologous free tissue reconstruction for H&N cancer (HNC). Methods A retrospective case–control study was conducted at our tertiary referral center. Patients with HNC who received oncologic resection followed by autologous free tissue reconstruction were included. Preo...

Authors: Regnier P, De Luca V, Brunelle S, Sfumato P, Walz J, Rybikowski S, Maubon T, Branger N, Fakhfakh S, Durand M, Gravis G, Pignot G Abstract BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is suspected to influence the complication rates in patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). The aim of our study was to assess variations in sarcopenia in patients scheduled for neoadjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy (NAC) and RC for muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and to explore the impact of sarcopenia on complications linked to NAC or surgery. METHODS: Between 2012 and 2017, 82 consecutive patients who underwent NAC and RC for c...

Authors: Topkan E, Selek U, Mertsoylu H, Ozdemir Y, Kucuk A, Torun N, Besen AA Abstract Objectives: To investigate the influence of pretreatment primary tumor or nodal photopenia (PP) on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography (FDG PET-CT), an indicator of tumor ischemia, on survival results of nasopharyngeal cancers (NPCs) treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (C-CRT). Methods: The pre-C-CRT FDG PET-CT scans of 104 patients with NPC (cT1-4 N0-3 M0) were retrospectively examined to determine the presence of PP (PP+). Our primary endpoint was the influence of PP+ on overall su...

AbstractBackgroundRadical lymph-node dissection along the recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLN) improves the prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer. The RLN is a landmark for achieving adequate lymph-node dissection. However, the right RLN is sometimes covered by the right vertebral veins (VVs), making it undetectable. We investigated the relationship between this anomaly of the right VVs and the challenges of performing lymphadenectomy along the right RLN.MethodsPatients with esophageal cancer, who underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy with radical lymph-node dissection, were registered. The patterns of the right VVs wer...

Abstract Pharmacotherapy and imaging are two critical facets of cancer therapy. Carbon nanotubes and their modified species such as magnetic or gold nanoparticle conjugated ones they have been introduced as good candidates for both purposes. Gold nanoparticles enhance effects of X-rays during radiotherapy. Nanomaterial-mediated radiofrequency (RF) hyperthermia refers to using RF to heat tumors treated with nanomaterials for cancer therapy. The combination of hyperthermia and radiotherapy, synergistically, causes a significant reduction in X-ray doses. The present study was conducted to investigate the ability and ...

ConclusionsPreoperative sarcopenia is an independent prognostic factor of postoperative morbidity and shorter survival in CRC peritoneal metastasis patients treated with CRS –HIPEC. Our findings support the importance of preoperative screening for sarcopenia as part of preoperative risk assessment for better selection of CRS–HIPEC candidates or treatment modifications in CRC patients with peritoneal metastasis.

Authors: Richmond J, Mbah OM, Dard SZ, Jordan LC, Cools KS, Samuel CA, Khan JM, Manning MA Abstract BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the US, and significant racial disparities exist in lung cancer outcomes. For example, Black men experience higher lung cancer incidence and mortality rates than their White counterparts. New screening recommendations for low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) promote earlier detection of lung cancer in at-risk populations and can potentially help mitigate racial disparities in lung cancer mortality if administered equitably. Yet, little is known about the ...
