Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens exist as planktonic cells only at limited times during their life cycle. In response to environmental signals such as temperature, pH, osmolality, and nutrient availability, pathogenic bacteria can adopt varied cellular fates, which involves the activation of virulence gene programs and/or the induction of a sessile lifestyle to form multicellular surface-attached communities. In Salmonella, SsrB is the response regulator which governs the lifestyle switch from an intracellular virulent state to form dormant biofilms in chronically infected hosts. Using the Salmonella lifestyle swi...

We previously isolated E. coli strains from Japanese colorectal cancer patients, and in the present study we investigated the genotoxic potency of the colibactin-producing (clb+) E. coli strains that carry the polyketide synthases "pks" gene cluste...

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is known to cause its virulence by secreting various effector proteins directly into the host cytoplasm via two distinct type III secretion systems (T3SS-1 and T3SS-2). Generally, T3SS-1-delivered effectors help Salmonella Typhimurium in the early phases of infection including invasion and immune modulation of the host cells, whereas T3SS-2 effectors mainly help in the survival of Salmonella Typhimurium within the host cells including maintenance of Salmonella-containing vacuole, replication of the bacteria, and dissemination. Some of the effectors are secreted via both T3SS-1 and T3...

In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of our two previously developed real time-quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays for the detection of swine-associated Bacteroidales genetic markers (gene 1–38, gene 3–53) in the Yangtze Delta watershed of southeastern China. The results indicated that the gene 1–38 and 3-53 markers exhibited high accuracy (92.5%, 91.7% conditional probability, respectively) in detecting Bacteroidales spp. in water samples. According to binary logistic regression (BLR), these two swine-associated markers were well correlated (P
